Triumph Rocket motorcycle on target for 400 mph record

Triumph has built a motorcycle that it says can go 400 mph, but Mother Nature may not give it the chance to prove it.

The motorcycle manufacturer has announced plans to go for the two-wheel land speed record this August at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats with its Triumph Rocket. The 25.5-foot-long streamliner is built with carbon Kevlar and powered by two 1.5-liter Triumph Rocket III 3-cylinder engines that have been tuned and turbocharged by Carpenter Racing to put out a combined 1,000 hp running on methanol.

The rider sits in front of the engine in an enclosed, recumbent position, and British racer and TV personality Guy Martin is signed up to fill the seat. The bike sits on two, swingarm-suspended wheels shod in Goodyear Land Speed Special tires, and has a pair of small, retractable stabilizers to hold it upright as it starts and stops.

Triumph motorcycles held the record for all but about a month between 1955 and 1970, and its most iconic model, the Bonneville, was named as a tribute to its success. The mark currently stands at 376 mph, set by Rocky Robinson with a Suzuki-powered motorcycle in 2010.

In development since 2013, the Triumph Rocket has already tested on the flatsand is scheduled to hit them again this month. Unfortunately, The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the remains of mudslides from recent flooding combined with rain and salt depletion across the flats have left the surface in such bad condition that there may not be a good stretch of salt available for record attempts this summer.

Organizers of the annual Bonneville Speed Week event, which was washed out in 2014, will decide this weekend if they can go ahead with this year’s edition, currently on the calendar for August 8-14. Triumph has already had to delay this month’s testing once due to weather, but is still targeting an August 24-27 window for the Rocket’s run.

Donald Trump goes after Senator John McCain's war record


Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s criticism Saturday of fellow party member and Arizona Sen. John McCain’s for being “captured” during the Vietnam War brought sharp rebuke from others in the GOP field.

“He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said at the Family Leadership Summit, in Ames, Iowa. “I like people who weren’t captured.”

Fellow GOP White House candidate and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry tweeted that McCain “is an American hero” that all U.S. prisoners of war “deserve our nation's highest debt of gratitude” and that Trumps’ comments are “disgraceful.”

Ten of the 15 GOP presidential candidates are at the conference for religious conservatives.

Trump made his remarks after conference moderator, Republican pollster Frank Luntz, described McCain as "a war hero" and Trump was pressed on his recent description of McCain as "a dummy."

McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down during combat in Vietnam.

McCain and Trump have been feuding for days. The discord apparently started as a result of a join event in Arizona that swelled to 1,500 people when Trump decided to attend.

McCain referred to the attendees as “crazies.”

Trump later complained about have financially backed McCain’s failed 2008 presidential bid and said that McCain graduated last in his class at the U.S. Naval Academy.

“John McCain is an American hero,” Republican candidate and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said on Twitter in response to Trump’s most recent remarks. “I have nothing but respect for his service to our country.”

Fla. Sen. Marco Rubio also took to Twitter to blast the business mogul for his remarks.

As you can tell I haven't been into it either. I was in Vegas years ago around halloween time back when my son was a little guy and Hulk Hogan was at the MGM grand casino so we went to see him and Hulk walked into the ring in his street clothes and retired in front of the crowd. Then everybody started booing and we left. That sucked
