Well, @RM3, you also boast that the extra blue from actinic boosts the quality of your weed, which I actually noticed too, but when LED growers make claims such as "higher quality" it usually gets shot down as unproven. Why is it that DIY vero and cxa/cxb growers are regularly pulling in over 1g/W and claiming better quality than HPS, but LED growers are forbidden from using the quality argument? I personally have no idea if using white leds has improved quality. Of course I'd like to think so, but nay sayers say no way. What I do know is I've been getting HPS like results with less watts in.

True my buds are very potent. I have had the benefit of many growers smoking (and growing my strains) and posting smoke reports over the years. Which is hard to argue with and why I believe most have excepted what I have said.

I see no reason why an LED grower could have a smoke off test and "prove" the quality statements, there is no doubt in my mind that a better spectrum = better quality

I'm height restricted at 60" total in my grow space.
I had success with autoflowers (short) and a T5HO/Mars 900 LED grow.
I am interested in LEC but I'm concerned I don't have enough headroom.
Am I correct in that assumption?

I think you could set up and run a decent grow with 315W CMH lamps in (preferably sealed and vented) hoods.

Is it five feet from floor to ceiling, or is that just what's left above your media?

He says total. If 60" is total height id go with something that spreads fast. Form factor wise bml is nice but if he scrogs he can get away with LEC. Multiple smaller Fixtures like a51 would be good. Also tasty would be a good choice as well as PLC. LEC has spectral shift and loses efficiency when run horizontal.

What is container height? Is scrog an option? You need to have at least 18" between canopy and lec fixture. So you lose 30" right there. So if container is 10" you have 20" to work with. Scrog or short container sog.

Really? I didn't know that about the smaller ones. I run the big ones and they're vertical operating position only.

yep, they are all designed for vert position, some are universal but with minimal losses/shift/faster lumen depreciation

That's a lot like saying the Challenger articulated was the best in the steam powered locomotive world... It's still obsolete.

COB LED for the win! Such a solution would also suit the above poster's low ceiling situation very well.

im currently testing the ceramics,, on my 2nd run with them, my first run helped me see how plants respond to the lamps, further grows will be even better..even with zero veg time on clones i yielded 800 grams under 630 watts of cmh..i couldve done way better had i vegged...if intersted please check out my journal,,id say a 315 watt cmh is equal to or better than say 500 watts of hps,, better than a 400 but a little less than a 600 watt hps, coverage is good 4x4 at 2 ft above canopy..this run ive placed 3 315 watt cmh over a 4x6ft table, 945 watt total, but i know 2,630 watts will cover the same table with better than a gpw..

That is floor to ceiling. The LED has a low profile so it worked plus I grew autos which were short. My grow bags are 8" tall.

COB LED is better TODAY, because it's as much as twice as efficient. The only fly in the ointment is cost, and that's rapidly changing. In two years anyone still growing under HID will be playing catch up.

Since it sounds like a consensus is building that you just don't have the necessary overhead for 315W lighting, your best lighting answer is going to be CXB3590 or similar chip, under driven to boost efficiency. The guys over in the LED section right here on RIU are widely acknowledged as being among the best in the world on the subject of DIY COB lighting for growing.

very true and spd's aside cobs are the efficiency champs................costs are coming down at a rapid pace, those philips T8 led bulbs we're talking about in the other thread were $22 six months ago and now are under $10 @ hd
