Heard a good anecdotal story along those lines.
If I were to pour water over the heads of 10 people I may get 10 different reactions ranging from "you made me mad", "you made me sad" you made me angry", "you made me vengeful", "you made me depressed", when in truth, all I did was make them wet. The emotions people felt were on them, not me, it's what they allowed themselves to feel.
We used to survive the playground taunts by saying "sticks and stones may break my bones.......". We seem to have forgotten that childhood lesson.
