Ketogenic diet

My morning shake today:
1/3 can coconut milk
2 scoops cashew butter
1/2 avocado
2 tbsp hemp seeds
2 scoops Greek yogurt (I use fage)
2-3 frozen strawberries
1 banana
some spinach
and an ice cube

I know this shake it probably pretty high in sugar from the berries and yogurt, but it has a lot of good fat too. I like to do a shake in the morning for the simple fact that I don't get really hungry when I wake up and I can modify how I want. I'll usually do a little lower sugar shake, less berries more avocado, but needed a little extra energy this morning to get going. That's the key to me, this isn't a diet where you can cheat or anything, there are really no foods that are technically off limits. You just can take yourself out of a keto state if you do eat too many of this or that food, but if your body is good at burning fats already then you'll right back to that state if you go back to eating good fats/no sugar, etc.
good fats don't do very much for you if theres lots of sugars to be burned tho :(

i would literally kill for something that sweet right about now lol. when i have sugar craving attacks i eat a banana with some low sugar peanut butter... 35+ carbs easy and probably enough to nock me down the keto ladder a bit BUT its like eating some exotic dessert when you never have anything sweet lol.

i dont wanna be a bearer of bad news but shakes like that especially in the morning will probably extremely hinder your chances at getting into keto. once into keto for a while having something like that on a day you will go run a few miles or maybe have a really hard workout... then its probably going to benefit you a bit and you will burn through the sugar and keep your fat burning mechanisms working, if you have a shake like that and go sit in your cubicle... its a recipe for belly fat and diabetes... Jamba juice(or any juice shack) is literally giving people who think they are healthy diabetes EVERY DAY! might as well drink MT dew with a centrum silver in the big picture of things.

Yea it def was heavy on the sugar side but monday is my light day at school, I'm only in class like 2 hours, and then I work out for 2-3 hours. but I hear ya though, I know it's too much sugar but I feel like I'm still weak and need that boost somewhat. Well I know I'm still weak lol, totally addicted to sugar it's sad. Also, I'm kind of at the point where I'm semi hungry in the morning but not really hungry so a shake always seems like a good thing. I was doing bacon and eggs for awhile but brunt out on that for breakfast. Do you think they would hinder me even if I did some of the shake recipes on Sissons website? Idk if you checked out his "5 Savory Shakes" or w.e, but I usually try to stick to his recipes which are way lower on the sugar side of things. I'll probably just cut the shakes out totally for now if you think it will hinder me because I really want to feel how it is to be in a keto state and don't want anything holding me back. Do you still get hungry in the mornings? I remember him (sisson) talking on rogan experience about not being hungry till 12ish. I kind of feel like I'm getting there, I feel less and less hungry in the mornings

LMAO, banana and pb has been my go to sweet tooth thing since I've started! Well actually banana and almond butter cause I thought you couldn't have peanuts or am I wrong on that?....either way, hilarious. I have the exact same reaction too, that god damn sugar!

Eat fat..but not get fat.
That's the idea, but this diet alone won't make you not get fat. A lot of people do lose weight when they start this diet though, and that's because you burn all your stored carbs (glycogen) and they can hold up to 4x their weight in water. Essentially your losing a bunch of water weight, so, in other words, you still need to be active. Also, the key is not to just eat fat but eat GOOD fats

Didn't have anything else for breakfast so had to do a shake, made it with a lot less sugar though since I won't be working out so long today
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 1 scoop whey protein
  • 2-4 tablespoons water (optional, if needed for texture)
  • 1/2 – 1 cup ice

So yea don't really know what day I'm on now (I think day 20) , should be getting close to the 21 day mark but I'm no longer keeping track as I feel that the number is arbitrary and I feel like my body is probably already in a keto state....maybe. Either way I feel great so whatever is happening I like it. Nothing really new to report, my stomach is doing a little better so that's good and all the good effects are still present.

I stopped drinking way before I started this diet (probably about 6-7 months ago), so I don't know if the mental clarity I feel like I'm experiencing is from that or the diet. I'll say, I haven't noticed any MORE mental clarity or anything like that since I've started this diet, so maybe I'm as clear as I can get lol.

Going to start incorporating pseudo grains again this upcoming week. Probably just one meal a day in the afternoon/evenings after or right before I start my workout. I'm going to stay away from consuming any carbs in the mornings as I feel they make me crash and set me up for failure the rest of the day.

Tried this shake this morning, thought it was pretty tasty
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup coconut water
  • 1 stalk kale, chopped (stem removed). Kale is easiest to blend if you either boil it for 1-2 minutes or put it in the freezer for 30 minutes or so.
  • 1 scoop whey protein
Have been a week or so back with the pseudo grains and I really don't notice a difference. It's mostly been quinoa, that shit is bomb. Still like the good things that the diet is doing for me. The mental clarity and not getting crazy hungry are the two biggest things I've noticed. This way of eating isn't really that hard to maintain either, you just have to plan your meals and cook a little more than usual. I've enjoyed the results so far. Haven't lost or gained any weight, been weighing myself daily at the gym and I'm between 155-160 daily. No other things to report right now.

I'm a sugar freak..so sad of me..
Shouldn't judge yourself dude, sugar is a powerful substance that's in mostly everything we eat today. It's hard to avoid, so your body inevitably gets hooked on it. You should start by just cutting out the most sugary things in your life/diet. For most people this would be soda/juices/drinks. Start by only drinking water, that will lower your sugar intake significantly if you do drink those kinds of drinks, and go from there.

ive been going to the doctor and getting all my bloodwork and whatnot done. so far so good. we haven't done any direct keto tests or anything i actually haven't said anything about keto to him because i don't want to skew his results/opinion of it. I'm just letting him test me as if I'm normal and see what it all comes out as.

so far Testosterone is huge. other hormones are low. blood pressure is great. sodium is great. blood sugar is perfect. basically he said my results read like an 18 year olds and I'm 30... that to me is pretty huge considering i spent 20-26 doing my damnedest to try and kill my kidneys and liver!

organ function seems to be perfect. I've gained 10 pounds but I've lost 3 inches to my waste. yes 3 inches... my skinny jeans hang off me lol

only side effects I've noticed are leg cramps which can be solved by a little glass of saltish water at night before bed or a good cal mag supplement. "Natural CalM" works. besides leg cramps the breathe and BO are the only downsides and i can live with that. my wife says neither bother her and interestingly enough she's been more frisky since I've started this diet then at any time during out 7 years. either she likes the results on me of my smell is doing something for her lol. either way i can dig it!

the biggest kicker of all for me is the no yawning and tired tears in the afternoon. my first yawn of the day usually comes between 7-8pm and if i got late work to do a couple cups of Fatty coffee keep me going tim 2 am NO PROBLEM. if i don't have night work to do I'm out by eleven or so nice and easy. no fighting to sleep. no midnight snack cravings. nothin... just sleeping dreaming abut bacon and steak covered in butter lol...

Funny I came across this thread as I am about to start my "katosis diet" tomorrow.......I followed a similar routine back in 1997 and lost a ton of weight (well, for me), maybe 35 lbs. or so and kept it off for a while. My future son in law works for Medifast, which uses a similar plan basically balancing carbs and protein. A few thing to add.......

1. Small meals are best, spread out over the day. 6 smaller meals or snacks is the perfect number. Eat something right away when you awake is manditory.
2. Exercise the first week of the diet is frowned upon, unless you are already exercising and it's part of you normal routine.
3. It only takes the body 2-7 days to fall into katosis, depending on your body type and other factors.
4. Carbs should definitely be limited to 80 total a day, but 60 is even better.

Last time I only missed 1 thing......chinese food. My plan is to go 30 days, and evaluate my situation at that point. But in full katosis, I was losing 1 lb a day.

I like your thinking but if you're doing a ketogenic diet none of those 4 points apply, except maybe #4 but even then you're not supposed to have any carbs or at least limit to under 50g a day, but it sounds like a good diet for what you're trying to achieve! Unfortunately, they just don't apply to this type of eating habit.

Super interesting post dude, really cool to hear about an actual doctor visit and your blood tests. I've yet to go to any doctor or anything, I feel awesome so it would just be out of curiosity, but I'd still love to see where I'm at with almost 2 months in to this way of eating. So is testosterone boost something that is common with this diet? That awesome about the doc saying you read like an 18. I just turned 28, and although I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life I know that as you get older more maintenance is required to maintain that level of fitness. That was one of my main reason for trying to body hack. Well, that and I'm writing a paper on the changes, etc., from this diet for a research paper for class.

That highlighted part is one of the biggest and best advantages I've gotten from this diet. I just don't get hungry or tired throughout the day like I used to!

I don't remember if I've asked you this but you intermittent fast? I think that's going to be my next thing, starting with a 16 hour fast daily (probably only eat from 12- 8 ) and work my way up to doing maybe a 24 hour fast every month or every other week. I've been reading the benefits of fasting and they seem to be awesome. Just wondering if you've tried that or you already do that. It seems like it would be fairly easy with this diet as I don't really get that hungry in the mornings and eat the bulk of my food between those times anyways.

i don't eat until... well right now.. i just ate a salad... well my type of salad a handful of iceberg with about a pack of bacon crumbled up with cheese curds and Blue cheese. like 10 carbs Maybe and SOOOO GOOD lol. jocko willink said "i view a salad as a vessel to transport fats into my system" and it changed the way i look at veggies lol. so like twice a week i eat a big ole "salad"

but ya the time thing.. i don't eat til after 4 every day and thats usually my only meal of the day. sometimes after 10 pm if I'm doing late night work il reheat some meat from the day or il have a fat cup of coffee 50/50 with heavy whipping cream.. I've even been known to take a shot of heavy whipping cream if i get a sweet tooth. little drop of onnit strawberry emulsified MCT oil and you got a dessert snack that taste like ice cream if your eating fat and salt all day. but beyond the rare snack i do a clean 16 hours 5 days a week ez.

I've only done full 24 hour water only fast once so far and surprisingly i was good to go. i had to get a stomach ultrasound to check out my organs and i couldn't eat or drink anything before so i just added a little time on the back end and went 24 hours and felt fine. went home and didn't even cook dinner til the regular time with the family. its really amazing how not hungry i am on this diet.

also i supplement with 600 calories a day from heavy whipping cream in coffee and Coconut oil, i get about 3000 calories a week from natures way liquid premium coconut oil alone.(ketone builders)

i feel like i still have plenty of fat stores so i don't feel tired but i plan to get into bone broth for when i run outa fat to burn. my waste is literally melting away. I've lost 3 inches to my waste but I've gained almost 15 pounds. i feel solid and strong. weights that i struggled with 2 months ago are a breeze to me now. i also notice i have way more energy to work out - without all the hassle of "Pre workouts' and shakes and all the nonsense i did before. i literally just eat lotsa fat and i can work out HARD every day and sometimes twice a day. you asked about the testosterone and i reckon its from my affinity for kettle bells and deadlift. all over complete body exertion, to your body feels like your fighting for your life... good time to make some extra testosterone lol..

i also usually don't eat before i work out the first time of the day. a year ago if you woulda told me i gotta go worship the iron 10 minutes after i wake up because thats when the kids sleep.... i woulda been chubby..... like i was lol... but now i find that i have all the energy i could ever want and my head is clear FIRST THING when i open my eyes so i hit the home gym before the tots wake up. sometimes i get a cup of coffee in me but its been 70ish lately so i haven't felt the urge to warm up when i wake up, so for a couple weeks its been WAKE UP and hit the iron!

i was a vegetarian for 5 years so i feel i have a pretty good baseline to measure from. i was a fat ass before i was a veggie. lost 100 pounds as a veggie but i was an emotional WRECK! UP AND DOWN every day and all over the map. running in circles on red bull one minute - sleeping on the couch the next. just a straight up roller coaster 5 year ride... i hit the gym ALOT and got down to 179 pounds at 6'3". i was was LEAN but i still didn't have abs... the most depressing and LITERALLY the thing that made me question everything i was doing. i worked out so god damned much and did so many ab workouts its not even funny... but a quart of ice-cream gets rid of 11 ab workouts sooooo.. i was spinning my wheels. i now have real deal abs lol. i work out less then i did as a vegetarian and the results are 2-3X as obvious to me. i not only SEE the difference i FEEL it. i used to increase my weights like 5 pounds every 2 weeks as a veggie.. i can probably get 10 pounds a week now EZ. I'm outgrowing kettle bells faster then i can afford bigger ones lol.

the movie that really opened my eyes was "that sugar film" it doesn't have anything to do with ketogenics per say but its all about sugar in our society and how crazily it pervades EVERYWHERE. after that movie i started paying more attention to guys talking about ketogenics like Tate fletcher and joe rogan and the rest is history. il never do it any other way either... as a veggie i couldn't of told you that... i always said "o man idk i miss meat" I'm so confident in this diet i even forget that I'm on a diet if that makes sense... i just am what i am now lol.. it fits and i love it!
