Social Security is NOT a hand out. It is an insurance program the individual HAS PAID in through taxes. Supplemental security is DIFFERENT. Now that program EVERYONE'S tax money goes to. Social Security is for yourself and you do not get social security unless you have worked enough and passed the limit of tax collections to be eligible.

Another little bit if information to educate yourself on the topic. If you're under 65 and collect ssdi, you're not eligible for MEDICARE for 24months. After 24 months you are then eligible, hence the reason I have mediCAID, I have not been on social security long enough. Also, you are able to still work while on ssdi, where as ssi you are not. Both systems are good if you really need it, but the pay sucks. So do anything possible to get off disability if you can so you can be more comfortable living, money wise, and pay in as much as you can like I did, so when you do need it your payment will be higher. Once I'm back to work, then I cancel my social security and then start paying back into it until I break my back again or am so old I can't move.

Not in my case, but you're correct. I'd be getting right around what I paid in, if i were to continue to collect it for another 7 years or so. I've been on ssdi for just under 2 years and plan on canceling it after I'm able to function enough to work enough hours equivalent to what my social security check is, or more. I'm young though. The way I see it is most people usually work until they are 65 yrs old or even older, so if they were fully employed for, let's say.. 45 years and had paid in that whole time.. By the time they start collecting and then later die, let's say at age 80, they would have exhausted the payments they had paid in. I guess the longer you live, you may cross over the threshold of what you had paid in, which then becomes a benefit I guess.

I'm 100% for social security and Medicare. It's a good program I guess for some people...though I wish I were able to keep that money instead of having it taken out in taxes then getting it back at a later time.. I'd have invested it or something. Social Security should have interest being collected on it the whole time, that would make it much more worth it imo. If I out 50k in a savings account, or anything that has an accruing interest payment on the principle.. I'd take it out at a later time when I'm injured and can't work and would have more money. Also, if certain months I needed more money for something unexpected, then I'd have it, instead of having a set x amount of dollars you receive on the 2nd Wednesday of the month hahs

$1100 a month for 9 years = $118,800
the cap for social security is about $118,000 per year, at 6.2%.
6.2% of %118,000 (or more) per year is around $7300 per year.
that would mean you spent 16 years (or more) making $118,000 (or more) per year.
yet now you are so broke that i have to send you a welfare check.
