If you try to watch an old episode, one of the first things you may notice, is how prevelant the laugh tracks were back then, including Barney Miller. tbh, I found it somewhat distracting looking back. Then, it was totally normal, prompting me when to laugh, even when the jokes we only soso. I don't watch much television these days, but I think the laugh track is more a thing of the past. Now we have to reply on good writing

I'm not much on TV either....haven't owned one for over a decade. Just the shows I like I watch online or DL but that is losing it's appeal too, even with the couple GOOD shows I've started in the last year or so... Yeah, I remember the laugh tracks too (I Love Lucy, Gilligans Island...MASH). They never really bothered me much personally...

good writing
I find that much of the TV writers these days focus heavily on the Millennial demographic, and that is to be expected, as the networks are functioning businesses. The laugh tracks certainly were/are a sort of odd timepiece, though I do miss the more adult-centric writing of yesteryear. Those shows had a lot more heart, as well. There is just something about that period around 1975-1985 that seemed so much more pure/real, before the Reagan-era plasticine scene set in fully....

Still a fair bit of solid stuff in the modern era, though....
