Soil layering will not be a benefit, generally speaking. If you want maximum uptake go for maximum distribution, as in mixing. The natural world cannot be assumed to be optimal, and in multitudes of cases we have proven that it is not.I normally either throw some wood ash/charcoal on top of the soil or mix it in when first potting. Ive tried an experiment this year and used quiet allot in a layer in the pot. My thinking is that in nature we get layers of charcoal/ash from bushfires and the plant will use what it needs from that layer..see how we go. Please note that i have about 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt in the soil to.
All in a small self watering pot.
The presumption that mother nature always does the best possible job leads down many paths to nowhere.
