I normally either throw some wood ash/charcoal on top of the soil or mix it in when first potting. Ive tried an experiment this year and used quiet allot in a layer in the pot. My thinking is that in nature we get layers of charcoal/ash from bushfires and the plant will use what it needs from that layer..see how we go. Please note that i have about 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt in the soil to.
All in a small self watering pot.
Soil layering will not be a benefit, generally speaking. If you want maximum uptake go for maximum distribution, as in mixing. The natural world cannot be assumed to be optimal, and in multitudes of cases we have proven that it is not.

The presumption that mother nature always does the best possible job leads down many paths to nowhere.

Your more than likely 100% right.
But the best way to learn is to experiment yourself.
Growing is a fun hobby and as someone posted recently "if i listened to everything people do my plants would be crap" or something along those lines.

So far (early days) they are doing really well. Different PH in different layers and quadrants of the pot. Do I expect then to grow like nothing ive ever grown before? Nope..But on the odd chance they do...well... Id be happy with diff PH layers and the plants adapts and end up healthy. Its all experience.
I dont plan on adding anything except a fungal root additive either. Just plain water. So timing on harvest is a bit of a gamble.

I do a lot of stuff just to see what happens, and I totally get it. Cheers. :D
