Disease? Anyone ever seen this?

this plant has been healthy all year, but about 3 weeks go where it Y's out from being topped early on, one of the branches where it Y's started becoming very unhealthy and looked really deficient, but the other half of the plant is still healthy and stacking on weight.

What do you all think, a disease? No branch has snapped or anything like that.

That's what I've been wondering. My biggest concern is in reusing the soil next year -- don't want to if its a root disease, but if it's a root disease I would think the whole plant would be effected?

Sort of, there was a branch that broke off early on and there is black spots in there.

is the messed up part all on the same stalk? if it is probably some kind of a borer and it's hard to find the hole and you can't tell for sure until you harvest and split the stalk. I have had it happen but it took the whole plant. Use predatory nematodes in the soil all winter and take all the debris in the are and burn it.

Hey bud nice big pl ant !
Dig around the top inch around the trunk . Is the trunks cambium (outer layerof skin) soft ?? Or is there alot of earwig looking creatures around it ? Any holes on branch that a re soft ? And last one did you get the top dress kit from build a soil?

Naw they couldn't do that much damage. Wish it was them, that'd be an easy fix.

Thanks man, we're working on harvesting that branch now so I'll have to split it open soon.. It is all on the same stalk. Need to figure out what's causing it because it's effecting some of my plants, & I noticed the ones I started the earliest are the ones it's effecting.

Hey thanks buddy! How's everything going for you this year? Haven't seen you on the forums much recently (then again, I haven't been on here much)

The "mulch" is actually pine needles from around the property.. May not of been the best to use that? We used wiggle worm from build a soil. I couldn't find any soft spots on it or earwig looking creatures, but we did see some nasty looking bugs in the soil of some other plants & im not sure what they are - I'll post pics. We found 1-2 very small holes, but no soft spots :/

I really want to figure out what's killed a couple branches/plants -- my main concern is in reusing the soil next year if it's a root disease.

Life is good brother ! Moving back to cali in a few weeks for a job .
That is a grub in the pic . Probably not the issue for you . But might cause some root damage . Not sure .
I have missed lurking on RIU for sure an hope you have an amazing harvest . Corn borers ate my guess on this one . But I would reuse the soil and ammendment with a bunch of crustacean meal in the winter as it causes enzymes that can kill bad soft bodied insects .

Edit did you ever dig around the base a little ? Like an inch or 2 down till you see roots ? If you buried the plant too much like many friends did when transplanting you could have crown rot issues .

Yea I did dig around there - cant tell if I have root issues or not, but I'd say i definitely planted a little to deep - was trying to make the plant a little more sturdy by doing that -- mistake lol. I'll have to look into that more, thanks once again for everything Joe!

Don't use pine needles for mulch unless your soil is more alkaline, which is unlikely if pine is flourishing. Pine mulch is to acidic.

Thanks for the input. I know it's acidic, but once it's sat long enough the ph of pine needles is right about perfect. Plus my water ph is really high and I don't oh stuff outdoors, so it all balances out. I read on it a lot before deciding to go that route. No ph issues for me this year :)

Sounds like you're on it. I hope you have a stellar crop. Worst case scenario you take those tops a little early.
