New to Indoor grow

I have grown outdoors for the past 3 years and this year I thought I'd try my hand in growing a couple of plants indoors during the winter. My question is....when do the plants start needing to be put in the growing space and when does it need to start needing the light? I germinated my seeds and have planted them in cups. They are about 2 inches tall now and I have them in my window. When do I move them to their grow space? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need a closet or tent, some good lighting (HPS/CFL/LED), a carbon filter/fan system and nutrients. At this point of growth you want the light as close as possible to the plant canopies (about 3-5 inches from the top leaf sets) to promote growth to the underside of the tops.

It's important they get fresh air throughout the growing space and have plenty of light for 24 hours a day while vegging, then 12 hours a day during flower.

Considering the day night cycle right now will trigger flowering, they should be under artificial lighting now. I put them in the grow space the moment they crack the surface, I like for them to get comfortable with their light cycle from day one. Just don't get the lights too close, the distance depends on the type of light.

I run my babies under a T5 and place the light about an inch over the tops in my veg closet. The bulb is barely warm, mostly cool to the touch and I grow them out to about 6-8 inches before placing them under the 1K HPS, raising the light a couple of inches as they grow out.

Fluorescent lighting is a bit less costly and is more than sufficient for starting plants. If HPS were the only light I used, I'd increase the space between them to about 12 inches away from the tops. I have no experience with LEDs myself, I've always preferred my HPS, as I feel it mimics natural light the best.

I run a 400w cob led for veg, I love it. With the built in fans it hardly puts out any heat, I still keep it up about a foot and a half as the light is so intense. Plus it helps to increase the footprint to fill the tent. I add a 400w hps for flower about 2 feet from the tops with my led a little closer and angled towards the middle of the tent. I've not used florescent lighting yet, but I hear they let off the perfect spectrum for veg and flower. Just recently got a high output t5 fixture, but I've been procrastinating buying the right spectrum of bulbs. Stoked to see what it brings to the table!

Yes, absolutely! Once you put them under your indoor light, they will take off ;)
Yes indeed, once those babies break ground they need it all, adequate light, proper watering/feeding, temps, circulation, etc. As Roseypeach said, they're ready to take off.

I am too.. the weekend has started.. :)

Ah yes!! the weekend!! :)

In my experience, unless you are using several of the T5HO bulbs, the output isn't nearly enough for flowering. They're great for clones, early vegging, etc just never had the best results with them. My buds were smaller and airy. I like the HPS because it floods the plants down to the stem much more efficiently and the buds get much bigger and denser. Which makes them worth their weight in gold :)

Just an FYI 24HRS of is a waste of energy 18/6 during veg. 12/12 for flower science has proven that plants can only intake so much light before they use that energy to grow during the off cycle and use a good organic soil not Miracle Grow to many additives and don't use nutes for at least 3-4 weeks

Hell yea, I would never replace my hps, except with a bigger hps! Lol. Just like giving it friends to hang with (pun intended).

3-4 weeks!? I'd say 1-2.. I do agree on the lighting though.

3-4 weeks? No way. 2 weeks it should be depleted. Depending on strain origins, 18/6 may not be optimal. Much research is necessary when deciding these things.

Thanks for all the tips :) I really appreciate it. I'm attempting to do 3 plants. Has anyone tried Northern Lights? That's what I'm growing. I'm sure I'll be back during my grow for any questions I might have. I love this site!!!!

It's a high yielder keep your Temps good and food just right depending on the size of your pots let's just say 5gal 1000hps easily I'd say 3/4 of a lb. Per plant granted you supercrop and top and FIM your plants to be a heavy weight the end result is always in the hands of the grower remember it can only be as great as the time that was put in
