I'd say the Sun System LEC315 3100K fixture is the best easiest thing to do.Hello i am pretty new here just trying to set up my first grow and just have a quick question for you if you don't mind. I've watched a video on YouTube where someone grew under identical conditions with a LED (not cree cob's) a gavita and and a 315w cmh and the thc levels were tested at 18.9, 18.5, and 22.5 respectively. I was wondering if you have noticed any loss of thc under your cob led compared to the cmh? I think it has to do with the UV produced by the cmh. I am trying to set up a small grow for my own medical needs so I don't need need a huge yield, I'd prefer quality over quantity which light would you recommend for me?

It does depend on what size space you are trying to light up and your budget for new equipment. You can do nicely with 400W of HPS or even MH, or get a gavita 6/750 Flex in case you want a 4'x4' to yield. The quality would not be limited that much by that lighting. You really have to study your space and make sure you create a good environment/air quality, that's probably the number one thing you should worry about. Having said that, everyone seems to agree that the LEC315 3100K is what you want for quality over quantity. One 315 is perfect for a 3'x3' space and could do as much as 4'x4', depending. Not everyone needs rock-hard nuggets like you get from really drenching plants with light. In addition, since the LEC315 doesn't get too hot it's easier to work with and ensure good air quality, versus a hot HPS.
I'd buy the Sun System model because it's got the best Phillips ballast and Phillips bulb, it will give you the spectrum and brightness you want compared to cheaper units. If you want to save a little, get the SunSystem 315 Commercial fixture, but you'll need at least 240V power, they don't make a 120V model of that.
People claim to get impressive quality from good LED. I'd avoid most of the junk on the market. I'd check out Pacific Light Concepts, Northern Growlights, or tasty LED. It can get expensive up front, but promises energy savings, and no bulb replacement for the life of the fixture. It's also possible to do make your own fixture similar to the ones those guys sell, and get a lot for your money and your time. You could spend forever geeking out on RIU how to make a cob DIY fixture and you might not get what you want. The three companies LED companies I mentioned make good stuff, priced reasonably, just a bit more than if you built it yourself.
Still, I'd say that compared to the LEC315, a nice LED fixture wouldn't make a huge difference for a small personal grow, in terms of quality or yield or cost.
