This is what I use. It is documented in my thread. The easiest thing to do is just use some sand, perlite or mulch in the top of the pot.

No chemicals need for gnats. Perlite, sand or mulch will fix them. Spinosad is great for any other pest. Spinosad is not a chemical either. It is a bacteria found only in one place on earth, in an old rum distillery.
