Well Trump has done away with the business-killing restrictions against selling guns to the mentally ill.

Speaking as someone from the mentally ill group, I would say this: do NOT give me permission to own a firearm. Someone with a history of depression or mental illness shouldn't have a gun. Period.
Sure, some mentally ill people might be able to own firearms and be safe if they stay on their medications and/or stay in therapy. But what of those that slip? It's an insane notion to give these people firearms. Nothing good can come of this, imo.

I'm sry to hear that man. I hear you and if someone is doing good and taking meds can't they still get depressed?

I can't speak for everyone that has a mental illness. I know when I'm medicated and in therapy, there is always the chance I'll fall back into an unstable state. All good intentions cannot guarantee success. So the safest bet, don't have a gun around.
