"I think I vegged too long..." - A first timers grow

First time grower here!

- 5 feminized Northern Lights from Nirvana
- Grown in connected 5 gal buckets with another 5 gal bucket reservoir, actively recirculating via pump and top feed lines.
- 1100 gph air pump (60w) with a line to a 5" airstone disk in each grow bucket. For the first 6 weeks I used garbage individual 2w pumps with 2' stones. Upgrading made a big difference.
- 5'x5'x7' tent
- 1kw MH and HPS lights in a cooltube hood
- 440 cfm exhaust fan and carbon scrubber

I vegged for 8 weeks. I know it's on the longer side, but since I was using the 'Manifold' or 'Mainline' technique (specifically the one with two rounds of toppings by NebulaHaze) I figured they could use the extra recovery time.

A picture timeline:

January 19th,
about 2 weeks after sprouting. I had originally started with 4, then decided to sprout 2 more a week or so later. Bad idea! One ended up dying early, and the other one became the runt of the litter, for obvious reasons. (it's the top left in the pic above).

Here's one on Feb 9th, a few days after the second round of topping and LST. You can see some spots that I believe was the result of nutrient burn (I had doubled the PPM in the nute mix around this time).

Feb 24 - Plants above are now about 7 weeks into veg. As you can see, very bushy, and less than 2 feet tall. There is still a good 4' left of max light height. However, this is shortly after I upgraded to a much bigger air pump and airstones.

March 3 - a few days after the switch to HPS light, 12-12 light cycle, and the start of the flowering stretch. If you compare to the previous photo you can see they've grown maybe another foot just in the time it took to transition!

Here's another shot from March 3, taken to give you a better idea of the height of the plants relative to the tent space. Note that I was able to raise the light even higher eventually by strapping it directly to the top bar and removing the hooks.

... I've got more recent pics to upload with my question coming up next..

Here they are as of today, March 12!

As you can see, it's a beautiful hot mess. I stopped LSTing after I ran out of horizontal room, and just sort of let them grow. I read plenty about defoliation and supercropping, but haven't built up the courage to really do it yet. I did a round of minor defol in week 1 of flower per GrowWeedEasy's recommendation.

But my real question is, what should I do now? They are 2 weeks into the flowering switch, so another month and a half to go, and there's only 12-16" of distance from the light depending on plant.

Also, they are just so damn bushy and crowded that the bottom half of the plants are really not doing anything. I'm sorely tempted to remove not just fan leaves, but growth tips that aren't making it up to the canopy.

I also figure I can just leave them as is, and they'll still produce. But of course I want to maximize my harvest and quality, so I'm open to suggestions!

Oh and Nutrients in case anyone was wondering:

- General Hydroponics Flora trio
- ProTekt silica supplement
- Beneficial organisms: Hydroguard, and later bought Great White

Note: I started seeing signs of pythium/algae in the buckets. I took a variety of measures over time - water chiller, hydrogen peroxide and a sterile grow, lightproofing.. I think the turning point was either the air pump/stone upgrade or the Great White.

Additional stuff I tried from the GH box set I bought:
- floralicious plus
- liquid koolbloom
- Florablend
- RapidStart

Additional stuff I bought but didn't see much value from:
- Neem oil
- Hygrozyme
- pH up (proTekt seems to be enough)
- CaliMagic

I used the CaliMagic at half dosage every other refill as a 'just in case'. I'm using tap water, softened municipal water with a PPM of ~100-150 out of the tap and a pH of 8-9

no such thing as vegging too long. top them, cut them, trim them up , lollipop them to the exact size you desire clone them and flower next time
looks like a non issue to me, bend twist tie for now.

OK thanks for the feedback. The tops have the biggest bud sites on the plant though, would you really have me cut those down 2 weeks into flower?

And when you say 'bend twist tie', could you describe that in more detail?

Nice 1st grow! I made the same mistake for the first 3 runs in my 4x8 tent with 3 plants. DWC, LST 1000w gorilla grow. I had to much larf (fluffy under bud). The canopy was so thick the light couldn't penetrate it which left me with way much wasted air bud. We live we learn.. Now I do 1 or 2 plant scrogs and yield 25/35 oz per run (strain dependent of course) with very little waste.

I would lollipop the hell out of that. Remove all of the sucker branching that don't reach the canopy. If it is still too dense I would remove a majority of the fan leafs and popcorn bud 18 inches from canopy and below. Focus the remaining growing time to the canopy. Removing the undergrowth will help keep humidity manageable and help the air circulate to curb any mold or powdery mildew that would normally occur in such a dense forest. Just my 2 cents from past experience. Lowering plant count will save money on nutes, water and other supplies especially if you are running just one strain.

I would cut all of the side branching (suckers not reaching canopy) in 2 or 3 steps within the next 7 to 10 days. You should be able to tell what to eliminate by the thin branches and small buds sites. After you do this you should be able to tell how far into the plant the light will reach. Then I would strip away the fan leaves and corresponding bud sites that are not receiving any light. It might be a little to early to crop the taller colas... but when you do, pinch them so they don't steal light from the other colas.

Northern lights is usually short so you might get away with it 3rd week of stretch coming up so you'll soon find out

What strains do you grow to get 25/35 per scrog? That's a 4x4 tent, or what?

Healthy looking plants. I think a lot of growers make the mistake that their plants won't grow much when they switch them to flowering when in fact they tend to gain more height then they do through veg. I would just trim down the bottom part of the plant and do some bending to keep the canopy even and prevent it getting to close to the lights. It may seem strange to you but bending some of the branches will help you spread things out and keep things even while giving you fat colas

have you cut it down? I didnt say cut anything down. I did say

no issue lollipopping now, but all of this trimming is best done in veg cycle, next time

My tent is 4x8.. the 1st pic is a hash plant and grossed over 33, the second is a Death Star and it was just put into jars so I'm guessing between 25 and 30. I'll weigh it after the cure.
