So, I grew up in the northern Midwest US. Winter lows overnight routinely reach -35. Often less. One of the things gardeners use to extend the season there are 'hoop houses'. They are semi excavated/submerged greenhouses. It wont turn winter to summer, but getting the roots below the frostline in a warmed greenhouse adds a fair amount of extra time to the growing season. With active ventilation they stay cool well in warmer temps too.
I'll be investing in some of these when I move hey, seen them used well in many parts of Oz
