How to Secretly Run Ductless A/C at Home?

outside= no secret anymore.
yes it can be done, like @brewbeer said gonna take alot of air, expensive to move. I exhaust mine into the other side of the wall, the rest of the barn. even in an airy space like that I've got no less than 5 high powered fans moving non stop. it sucks. with that racket I could have planted some bushes outside around the fukken split around back, I frikken told her, but no, she didnt want any evidence outside the building...

It can be done look into building an ac box just on a bigger scale

Yes. I just did this, put a 5 ton split in a basement this past winter. I live in Michigan. I opened up a hole in an old chimney and put 8" elbow in it, and got two reducers, 8-10" & 10-12". And used a 12" fan 1700 cfm. Has worked fine so far. But springs almost here so I got my fingers crossed. I suggest building a small room around unit and passive intake from outside. Just depends on your location and setup. But make the room small. Your going to want to exchange the air in there serveral times a min imo.
So if your room is 6x6x8 you'll exchange the air every 10 seconds. Trust me it's not overkill. They put off alot of heat. Chimneys the best cover to dispose of hot air. Also basement is best location imo. Coolest place. And if you live there you could always heat your house with that air all winter. Again, setup and location will matter in your case.

Garage will need some SERIOUS ventilation for an efficient running split system. Its gonna cost you more electricity to hide it thats for sure.

What's wrong with having a compressor outside? Everyone likes to be cool right? It could be for your living room, who is gonna know? When you see an AC unit outside some house, do you just immediately assume there's a grow going on in there? 99.999% of the population would never even look twice at an AC compressor, much less speculate as to why it's there. Save yourself the hassle and put it outside where it will work right.

^ What he said. I have mine outside the garage with the lines going threw the dryer vent and if anyone asks 'I have a small AC just for the garage.'

You hear an AC running in February around here, you're in a bad spot & and they have been watching you since you turned up onto the drive.

You guys dont run AC for heating? Lots of placers here run AC for heating in winter and cooling in summer. Some people run em 24 hrs a day 24/7 12 months of the year set at a comfortable temp.
24c is good. (yes, ive done that when i had a ducted reverse cycle AC)

Yes. Bitter, miserable, snowy, ice hell, winter lol. Although it may appear to be "small town USA" on the label, a quick look at our ingredients label lists "meth labs" & "moonshine stills" as staples. It would be awfully odd to see a AC running here in February. It would be equally odd not to see smoke coming out of a chimney in Feb. To see/hear both going simultaneously would get some attention. Of course, I imagine whoever is inside would be expecting some attention.

It's 2017, heat pumps in northern states and Canada are normal so an outdoor unit running in the winter (heating a house) is no big thing. Just buy a unit that has "low ambient" capability to insure it runs and cools properly in cold climates.

Two options my friend.
Place outside in ideal location with shrubs and make it not look suspicious.
Or
Build a room for them. Use 2" insulation boards and vent out chimney.
Noise is the easy issue to solve, just like smell. If done RIGHT no worries.
Just depends on your setup and location. I'm going to assume you live in suburbs from sound of it. Now if you get snow I would suggest placing inside. If you don't get snow place outside. My uncle uses a 4 zone to heat and cool his house, it's a 4 ton. Just depends on your particular situation. Neighbors are a big one tho. Be nice and keep them in your good graces.
If you responded back with some info I'll help but otherwise I'm out.
