Telling Sex By Smell

I can eye a plant and guess it's sex after a few nodes 90% of the time, I play the game with new seedlings and I have amazing accuracy. BUT, I wouldn't be culling based on that alone, nor would I be posting that method and suggesting other's try it because it's 90% accurate ffs.

Other guy was claiming greater than 95% accuracy based on smell alone. That means he misses less than 5 plants out of 100. Total Bullshit if you ask me.

Plants can smell like their fathers and be female and vice versa.

I have a line I'm working that has been consistent in picking the best phenos from stem rub smell, road kill skunk about 5-6 weeks from seed = killer phenos. But that's both males and females, both stink more or less the same, could be subtle differences but not enough to sex them. Too many variations in strains/crosses/phenos.

Yes, the stem rub is a useful technique for determining parental influence or favorable phenos not for determining sex.

What's all this about "smelling sex"? Are we talking intermingling perspiration? Crotch rot? Menstrual stuff?

This technique is not for amateurs!
How can you tell if you have a male or female while in veg?
You first need to have at least two plants of the same strain. Both plants need to be about 2 feet tall for the scent to be strong enough. Some strains work even earlier.

The Steps;
1. place your finger around the main stem of the plant
2. rub it up and down to get the scent on your hand
3. smell it!

what's the difference? a male plant will have a more aggressive smell, while a female has a much gentler, prettier smell if you will. You need the two plants in order to have something to compare against. Once your familiar with the strains smell. you can judge a male or female before it even shows any noticable signs of sex.

Allow me to be more clear about this post, first I should have titled it "judging sex by smell"
I did not start this post to argue with damn kids, it is to inform all the intelligent growers out there that are interested. It does work and the proof is in ALL plants not just weed.
I don't care what opinion you kids have...
A simple you're wrong.

Interesting the people supporting the ability to do this warn that it's tricky, a "learned technic" and you need to work with that strain first. The people denouncing it stand on the platform of "dats stoopid" and ohh wait I can post bs pics tooCat-Counter.jpg

Let me pose this question for a starting point...does a male plant have a particular smell?

The thread is 9 nine years old wouldn't you think if there was any validity to it, it'd be common knowledge by now?
Plants need to be 2ft tall for the stink to be strong enough? What percentage of plants have shown sex by that age? Most of the plants I've grown have shown sex in 4-6 weeks from seed.
You need two plants to compare to each other. What if you pick two plants of the same sex? Do you have to wait for the sex to be known for each strain before the stem rubbing begins to familiarize yourself with the different smells?
Males smell aggressive females smell sweeter and prettier? Sounds scientific as fuck. Males become much less aggressive the more you stroke their stem.
Generally when someone can't explain how or why something works with even a pinch of actual biology their posts start like this. This isn't for amateurs, you have to know when and how to do it, or the popular I heard threads. All of them are euphemism's for I don't have a fuckin clue but I'll say it anyway.
If you've never seen a cannabis plant or even heard the word you'd have a 50 /50 shot of guessing sex. Couple that with letting them grow two feet tall most strains would be showing preflowers by that time. Even without preflowers most plants have distinct male/female characteristics. Male's grow taller, faster, lankier, and with less leaves. There's a reason for it, being a wind pollinated dioecious plant it aids in their reproduction.
What's the need for male and female plants to smell different? What do hermies smell like, a mix of old spice, crocs, with a touch of doc martens.

Seeing as how there is very little research done on cannabis, with the focus primarily on female plants I'm referencing other dioecious plants.

"In the analysis of individual compounds, more active compounds (compounds triggering electrophysiological responses or affecting behavioral responses in pollinators) [17] were significantly different between the sexes than non-active compounds (Switzerland: active 93%, non-active: 50%; Spain active: 86%, non-active 62%). The emission of most compounds behaviorally active in Hadena bicruris [17] were found to be significantly higher in male flowers than in female flowers in both populations"

This clearly shows different terpene profile between males and females. With the theorized purpose of effecting animals for pollination.

Note what terpene was higher in females, Linnalool...and that smells like what...sweet/floral/fruit. Higher in males, 2-methoxy pheno...which smells...medicinal/woody/spicy...

Hmmm

I have noticed it's harder to find complex smelling males, but I got one that's real complex and would throw your test off.

Its true, females smell like there strain and males smell like vine or like an actual weed and not cannabis. Next time any one gets vine ripened tomatoes rub the stem then rub yoyr non fem plants. Not sure when you can tell but i wait till like a foot to even consider trying. So far its worked %100 even got in to a heated argument with my roommate because i pulled mine that were males asked him to do the same, he kept his and now i have a f**k ton of seed so have been having plenty of experience but i agree must have a professional noes and knowing the strain helps alot as well. (Just wanna add i only do summer grows so im speaking from outdoor experience)

I have a male that smells like fish sauce. Phu Quoc is the closest I can describe. I'm using it to make some real good fish fire strains. Fish Diesel, Fish Kush, and Fish Haze.

Since everyone else is continuing to post on this old thread, I will too. I have 4 plants, I LST'd two of them and today it was determined that one was a male (by looking at preflowers). But what I noticed was that the male grew to be much smaller than the other LST'd plant, hell its smaller than all of my other plants (keep in mind I still don't know if the other LST plant is male or female yet, still too early to tell with it) and during the entire veg, it had little to no smell while the other three plants always had some form of skunky stink radiating from them. Could the size difference be because I trained it and thus the plant didn't have a chance to grow like it would have in nature, making the arguement that males grow taller and faster than females invalid? I did notice though, that this plant grew pretty vigorously compared to the other ones yet it stayed much shorter
The alleged male plant in the photos is on the right side (the smaller one lol)
