I thought it would it would be cool if people posted their personal secret for growing onions. Whether seed or set, organic or super phosphate, I'd like to hear it!

I don't have much to share (hence the reason for starting the thread), but last year I discovered the importance of putting your onion seedlings outside to harden off before transplant. They were yellow and flopped over, I didn't think putting them outside would be smart, but a wise elderly Irish woman told me otherwise and they came back pretty quick once I did.

That's one frustrating part of my onions. Nice healthy tops usually, but maybe not bulky enough before they start putting on mass downstairs.
Im a onion freak . I got 4 kinds of onion seeds those bunching onions purplish easiest growing than the others . I got a rare kind from baker creek seeds . I got red onions globe kind and some other kind .They grow wild . once they get going good size . I love growing onions and eating them with certain stuff . You got to wait till harvest . I highly recommend just clay soil . Till the dirt and its packed with nutrients .They will do great most times. When you sow seed throw some save most so if they don't pull through sow more

Not a onion fan, but I still grow a few kinds anyway

Plant early
Plenty of water
Plenty of nitrogen

Harvesting at the right time helps taste and storage big time just something you have to learn for yourself as varity climate conditions have such a big difference

Naah it gets too hot and dry here in summer. I literally get a few scraggly leaves with virtually no bulb formation.
Great conditions for growing aubergines, but they taste like off cunt.

Anyone grown Allium oschaninii / gray or griselle shallots? I bought sets a few times and turned them to mush. I've grown some dank music variety garlic but no other alliums.

luckily onions are cheap as fuck, I'd rather grow fruit, those are getting crazy expensive.

How do you know when onions are ready to harvest? I've got 2 rows of 15 onions looking pretty healthy.
Started from the mini onion bulbs. White onion

Tie the tops in a knot late in the cycle, a spurt of growth I'm told.
it takes more patience dear friend . Try to hang in there and it will yield you full grown onions but it takes time .An before you know it harvest time will come around
The power went off I made a gallant effort. Yesterday was hatch day, 0 chicks. If I locate some nice eggs I will change my mind but today, your icon sucks. :finger:
