ill soon have about 16k worth of lights running 8/8 flip flop up in southern maine. I am able to opt out of the smart meter for like 40 bucks plus an extra 15 bucks per month. is it worth it? will I be a target to be looked at after opting out? is it better to not have the meter guy out in person to read the meter in case he gets a whiff? (we're on 3 forested acres up here)

With smart meters the power company knows by the millisecond when your lights go on and off and in the case of digital ballasts they can also know what it is that is going on and off.

If you're all legal and above board then no problem unless rippers are working at the power station that can access files and locate your grow for a robbery.

But as you are worried about the meter reader smelling it then it doesn't sound like you're 100% kosher so it's damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I grow in a legal state and fretted my meter reader, hop the gate 350 feet down the lane and surprise he's right there in my yard.
I welcomed the meter(s), I have two, one on my home and one on my outdoor grow building. I got apps and other hardware to use along with them, and dte called me. check this out. I must have invited them to research my usage and make determination, prolly when I got the apps...anyways she talks to me about changing the shift my girls work . now I never said anything about girls, work, etc.
she suggested since its always the biggest draw during those 12 hours daily maybe I could put the girls on the night shift. So I agreed and she bargained with me about the rate, I save 35% with that one move. My app now tells me when any electrical draw happens in my grow and/or home/property and specifically identifies it as what it is, what its using, how well its functioning, etc.
Each item has a unique algorithm signature that can identify the product. This info could be used one day for marketing, like "we notice your fridge is sucking these days and will sell you a new one" or your grow bulb is degrading now here is a coupon...

anyways, whatever, they already knew what I was doing and loved me for it. The meter man saw me with a plant once, and trays of harvest too. He purposely looks away and didnt say a word to me. I'm legal, plant #'s, patients, weight....so no worries....but coming from the old school its a tough adjustment.

I don't don't want anyone knowing what I'm doing call me a privacy nut...
You're not being paranoid when they're really out to get you so don't worry. :)

I use TOR to go to the forums, email that links back to me in no way and refuse to get a smart phone. No GPS on my camera and I sit with my back to the wall in public places.

Almost 50 years of messing with pot and lots of other drugs without even a charge tho have been caught with pot and lost a couple bags to cops. More often was told to hide it better. :) Vancouver was pretty cool about pot even 40 years ago compared to most everywhere else in the country. San Fransisco north! lol

Electric companies are like any other business, the bottom line is $$$$. Pay your bill on time and in full be a good customer and you''ll be fine. How often has the gas/oil company complained about the amount you're using to heat your house in the winter?

I'm legal but I run solar on my house so technically the power company pays me a few dollars to grow lol since I sell back my unused energy. Yay four dollars lmao!

Just getting a nickle out of the power company is a huge win!

My power is 23.5 cent/kwh so almost $90/mth to run a 1000W light 12 hours a day. Robber barons! :)

My friend tried to refuse the smart meter.. He told the guy to get the F off his property.. The next day he got a call from the feds.. Some creepy old guy that sounded like Wilford trying to scare him. I think that if you refuse it and make a fuss you become a target. After all, who wouldn't want a "Smart" meter?

I'd hate to run my lights at night unless forced to by temperatures. Nights are for sleeping once you hit a certain age.

So did your privacy. If you are cool with that, it is your choice.

I think, as his system actually allows the paying of a fee instead of installing the new crap it shouldn;t really raise any flags.
If the system was not optional and he resisted, it might have.

Me too. I also got a free hook from the pole to the building. 25K trans, and a discounted rate on my building use too....DTE/CP is good folk.... Guys that dropped the pole to building line asked more about the actual building set up for efficiency in operation then anything else. One guy said he's planning on a stand alone building and took notes...

I had no problem going to night flowering. I can sweep my chores in the morning few hours b4 lights go out.
veg is on full time so I can work in there anytime. dte helped me grow buds for less!
finally got a standby gen and it powers both buildings (home $ garden) at the same time on auto if the power goes out.
no more gas jockeying on the portables for me! woooohooooo

no power loss since installation months ago either..=insurance policy lol

I'm in the same boat,

I said yes to the company to put a smart meter in

but when the tech showed up he ran off

saying it was full of asbestos (is that the right word???)

fire proof material dangerous to human health?

then I got hassled by the power company again

I said the same as the tech

now we are at a standard off

I have a heavy machine shop and a music band studio

to conceal use, anything to show high power use is good

one guy I know has the largest toy train set in the east ...lol

It costs more to switch on and run my geyser for 2 hours than all the electricity the rest of my house uses in a day.

There is already a smart meter on the house we are buying. I would be paying to have them come out and put an electro mechanical unit on. I know it's legal up here but I still prefer it if no one knows what I'm doing. On the other side of the coin. A meter reader would be out once a month. Their shouldn't be any smell but it's still a small concern

If you live in a state that's not legal it might raise flags having them come out and retrofit your house. If your buying roll a solar setup into your home loan it's worth it.

It's an amazing thing to watch the data in a graph with a smart meter. At 8 at night I have a peak that is off the chart, 8 in the morning it drops to nothing lol. I got a letter saying I was the highest user of power in the area. That's only 1500 watts lol. Ya wish it was an option here, I also signed a document saying all my records were private and not to be shared ..... well until they get a search warrant lol.
