An eastern Newfoundland woman, who says marijuana use almost destroyed her, fears legalization of the drug will harm many more people.
  • "It makes me scared, angry and disappointed. I turned into an addict from weed and they're going to turn more people into me. Very sick people," she said.

'I needed it to survive. I didn't care how it hurt other people. I didn't care what it was doing to me.'- Jane Doe
"This is my problem with legalizing weed — they are going to turn more people into addicts."

CBC News has agreed to protect her identity and call her Jane Doe.

She said she knows that most people who use marijuana don't become addicted to it or even dependent on it but Jane Doe said she's proof that some people can become powerfully addicted to cannabis.

"Anything that you need in order to function is addictive," she said.

"I needed it to survive. I didn't care how it hurt other people. I didn't care what it was doing to me. That's an addict."

Doe has stopped using cannabis but said there was a time when constant marijuana use had a profound, negative impact on her health. She stopped sleeping and eating and her weight dropped from about 300 pounds to 104 pounds.

"All I did all day long was smoke weed. I'm just as bad an addict as a cocaine addict, as a heroin addict, as an alcoholic."

Addictive personalities
The leader of a Conception Bay North group that helps people with addictions said he has no doubt that Jane Doe is right.

"People do get addicted to it," said Jeff Bourne, the executive director of U-Turn, an addictions drop-in centre in Carbonear.

"I've got an addictive personality. So to me a drug is a drug, no matter if it is alcohol, marijuana or cocaine. It is all addictive. So if some people got an addictive personality, well they're going to get addicted."

Bourne said he has mixed emotions about marijuana legalization. He hopes it will mean that people who use it will have access to a safe supply of cannabis that isn't mixed with other potentially dangerous substances.

Supported by science
An addictions prevention consultant with Eastern Health said research supports the idea that marijuana is addictive.

"The answer is yes. Absolutely, marijuana is an addictive substance," said Wayne Bishop.

Wayne Bishop, an addictions prevention consultant with Eastern Health, says research shows marijuana can be physically and psychologically addictive. (Mark Quinn/ CBC)

"Roughly 12 percent of Canadians used marijuana in the past year. Of that 12 per cent, we know that approximately nine per cent will develop some sort of substance-related disorder connected to the marijuana use."

Bishop said research also shows that marijuana can be both psychologically and physically addictive.

He added that people who become addicted and then stop using cannabis do experience withdrawal symptoms such as body sweats, pain and physical discomfort.

They can also experience anxiety and stress, he said, as they go through psychological withdrawal.

An interesting marketing strategy. Create a fear among the public to encourage people to use your services to treat a non-existent condition. Problem is, some people will actually believe that this woman was not paid to make a fool of herself. Notice they claim it is fact, but offer no evidence other than saying it happened to an 'eastern NL woman'. I guess we're supposed to take his word for it, I mean he wouldn't lie to boost business, would he?
Caffeine is more addictive than cannabis according to Health Canada, where are the treatment facilities for all the Timmies addicts? I've met a lot of folks who really like their weed, but none were physically addicted. I am writing a story to counter the misinformation, so if you come across similar articles, please pm me.

Wow... So does that mean we can say cookies are addictive because you "crave" them when stoned? Who the fuck are these people and what the fuck is an "Addiction Prevention Consultant"? What qualifications does he have, same as the Executive Director above him? (an ex coke addict?)

I've gone on/off it since I was 12 years old. Never had any sort of withdrawal symptoms, regularly go off it for 2-4 days while travelling. To me to call anything addictive there have to be physical affects. Anything that doesn't can be considered a dependency, or a habit, but not an addiction. There's a huge difference.

12%......I got.a Statistic for y'all...90% of people who volunteer to answer survey are bed wetters. The other 10% is a cross section of people who are lonely and or on some sort of spectrum. As far as addictions go I'd rather be addicted to something benign like cannabis. Fentanyl on the other hand

When did we start calling junk food a disorder?

You had to know these people exist....they are the same people that tend to blame all of their personal faults on one thing or another.
the same people who can not accept responsibility for themselves or their actions.

these same people would throw a hissy fit over something trivial and throw a lamp or an ashtray at you .... then blame it on their lack of the"substance of the day"...
in reality they are the most self centered and narcissist personality's you will ever come across...
I have a nephew who is exactly like this....and blames it on his pot addiction....
man did I set him and his parents straight....he is just a spoiled little prick.

Sounds like a meth diet. Lets not forget NFLD is very much a heavily religious province so reefer madness is already strong there. But this ramps it up lol
I don't get religious peoples objection to cannabis. They drink alcohol as part of their rituals in church and preach acceptance of others - yet they got a problem with me smoking a joint and think they are morally superior to tell others how they should behave.
Maybe we should force them to obtain a liquor license and charge them for giving alcohol to minors. My first taste of wine was in a church and I ended up an alcoholic - religion nearly killed me. lol

then there is sushi....

Jesus had cannabis oil rubbed on his feet after his long walks

Kaneh Bosum[canna bis] is mentioned over 600 times in the Bible

we are cool with it....dude

there are many idiots on both sides..just don't be one of em..
Although true many religious followers refuse to acknowledge this, or the burning bush or the whole " I give unto thee all plant bearing seeds....." I guess some are in denial or haven't read between the lines

To each their own ,that is until they try to use religion as a tool to convince others of what to think on the subject of cannabis
