So ive already learnt a good lesson for my Hempy party cups.. Straight coco on top with expanded clay balls down the bottom isn't ideal. The coco wicks the water from the ECB keeping the coco saturated, which means only thick water roots want to make the coco home.
I noticed the outside of the rootball was homing the best fine-haired roots which I suspect is due to a small airgap down the walls of the cup allowing such a condition.
I think layering it like this will fix the problem;

60% coco 40% perlite - top 50%
----------------------------------
100% perlite - middle 10%
----------------------------------
100% expanded clay balls -bottom 40%
The drain will be at the top of the clayballs, and hopefully the perlite stops the wicking action so much.
