Some Interesting Thoughts to Ponder

You know, every time I buy something there are instructions in Spanish on the back. It seems that when it comes to making a buck most companies sure don't mind putting stuff in Spanish. But you know, a large portion if not most of the people that come here *DO* learn English, it just takes time, kind of like how you were saying that you would learn Italian or Mandarin, it might take a little more than a couple weeks don't you think? I have heard that it can take years to learn a language.

I don't really think there is as much melting going on in this pot as we tend to think. Forcing everyone to speak the same language or hell the hell out doesn't do much to unify a damn thing, this also would alienate. Fact is that languages have to change (evolve if you will) or they go pretty much extinct. Plus, how can it really hurt to know another language? I mean really. How does it pain you SO much that we should get the government involved in what language people speak?
If they don't want to speak the language that is their business, and they are welcome to move elsewhere. Hell, I'm still waiting for all the Democrats to move to Canada.

But that isn't the issue. I'm not advocating mandating the usage of English, except in official usage. Yes, I know there's historical examples where this did not work. Specifically the use of Latin by the Roman Church, and the lack of widespread literacy in Latin, but that is another example entirely.

I'm stating that we should adopt the English language as the Official Language of this Republic.

The official language isn't English. If it was there wouldn't be any government business conducted in any other languages. Every form, application, registration, etc. would all be in English, and unavailable in any other language.

That's not prohibiting the usage of Spanish, Italian, French, Attic Greek or Latin its just asking that everyone that is in this country show that they are willing to show a little bit of respect for this country and adopt the most commonly used language, it also asks them to show that they really are serious about becoming Americans, instead of just coming up here because it is a convenient way of getting something for nothing.

Wow why the fuck is everyone attacking TBT??? English should be the official language here. You can speak w/e you want but for government-related stuff it should be in English...He's right that it would be more of a melting pot if immigrants who came here learned English. How the fuck can you 'bond' with someone if neither of you know WTF the other person is saying???:wall:

But what will it accomplish? That's what I'm wanting to know.

It'll be on paper, in black and white and maybe probably even electronic form, for everyone to refer to. Problem is, the form of English likely won't be specified.

I can see some practical reasoning as to why English should be used as the "Official language" But we all know that this isn't about any melting pot. It's a back door tactic to alienate immigrants, and we all know what we mean by 'Immigrants'.

I understand that this may not be the driving reason of many people, but it straight up, no bullshit *IS* the driving reasoning for many that do want to push this whole English only thing. Try as you will but no one can deny that being part of the reason.

But If you want to talk about bonding, we don't do much of that anyhow. Americans have become isolated. How many people live in some subdivision and don't even know their neighbors? We may know the people next door, but for the most part, it's a neighborhood of people that just try as they can to avoid the other guy. And If you want to talk about getting to know people of another race/culture for the most part, we don't do much of that either - hence having black neighborhoods, Mexican neighborhoods and white neighborhoods.

I understand how frustrating it can be to try and communicate with someone who can't understand you. But how much are they going to want to talk to you if you see them on a lower level for not knowing your language?

Maybe that's applicable for the push here in the U.S., but why is English the international language of business (no, it's not UPS, imagine my surprise!), as, I believe, with commercial air travel? Many other countries seem to have no issue combining this with knowledge of their own mother tongue, so.. I guess I'm having a hard time understanding why this is even really an issue.

And cleatis, your sig line is sick.

why? we have NEVER in our 140 year history had a democrat in federal power...

I think you are talking out of your ass again TBT
Obviously, being a Canadian, you didn't hear on all the Democrats going on and on about how they were going to move to Canada if Bush got to elected. I'm still waiting for them to all prove that they aren't lying bags of wind and actually do it.

I'd try counting them off, but there's so many that it would take an eternity.

I won't be leaving. I don't just turn my back on the country I've risked my life for simply because it is imperfect. The patriotic thing to do is to fix the problems, not abandon your country. And so, with my vote on November 4, I will be trying to fix the problems, by throwing out the party that inherited a budget surplus, turned it into a nightmare, and brought our entire country to the brink of bankruptcy. And if Obama should lose, well, that's life, and I'll keep trying to throw the bums out.
