Trifoliate describes a type leaf of a plant that grow that particular leaf.

ternate leaves) are a
leaf shape characterized by a leaf divided into three leaflets.
This IS VERY MUCH genetic!

It is a result of a recessed gene becoming active, creating a change in hormone expression. The hormone involved is
AUXIN.
It has to do with how much auxin is being delivered to the meristem.
There are plants that normally express this way. It is a expression of a Fibonacci number and can vary quite widely (simply look at a spiral Aloe plant. Scientific name is
Aloe polyphlla)
So then, The term "trifoliate" does NOT apply at all here!
The term
WHORLED PHYLOTAXY is correct!
