Proper English Lesson

Ok, I've decided to post some common English mistakes so people who are posting can use the correct words in their posts. It drives me mad to see incorrect usage in posts. How can a bunch of stoners be taken seriously by anyone if they can't even write correctly. So here goes. . .

Use "have" instead of "of" when using it as a verb modifier (i.e. You should "have" smoked a bowl before watching your porn. NOT - You should "of" smoked a bowl before watching your porn.)

Use "of" when using it as a preposition (i.e. A pungent smell in a grow room is part "of" the growing marijuana experience.)

There are three (3) different forms of the word there, they're, and their.

Use "there" to refer to a place or state of being (i.e. Put your bong over "there" on the table.) (i.e. There are sometimes seven parts of a marijuana leaf.)

Use "they're" when you are refering to people or things that "are" as in an action or state of being - also referred to as a contraction - they are. (i.e. They're being typical stoners.) (i.e. I'm not sure if they're male or female plants.)

Use "their" when referring to a posession. (i.e. This is their third week in the vegging state.)

Feel free to add others below if you think of any or also feel free to post legitimate questions regarding the topic.

I hope nobody feels that I'm being a dick about it. I just think it never hurts to know a little bit about it.

ya, I've found that foruming (yes, i just created a verb) has actually degraded my typing skills. But I try to keep my apostrophes where they belong, my theirs, they'res, and theres in their respective places and whatnot.

Great post Bookworm! That also reminds me that the "theirs and there's" needs to be addressed as well.

Use "theirs" when referring to a plural posession. (i.e. These bongs are theirs)

Use "there's" when referring to the contraction "there is". (i.e. There's a ladybug tending to my three week old mother plant.)

as annoying as it is that people can't seem to spell/write/type, i think it's just something that's always gonna happen on a marijuana forum. but props for trying :bigjoint:

Thought of another.

We need to attend to the "articles" - a, an, & the. Do Not confuse the word "an" and "and". "And" is a conjunction that serves the purpose of putting words together to create sentences and clauses.

Use "a" as an article before a word that begins with a consonant (consonant = any letter of the alphabet that is not a vowel {vowel = the letters in the alphabet a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y.}) (i.e. Let's smoke a joint.)

Use "an" as an article before a word that begins with a vowel {see "vowel" definition above.} (i.e. When smoking marijuana you can use an oxygen bong.)

I think complaining about spelling and grammar is a little bit more annoying than those who cannot form sentences or spell. If you have a standard, don't expect everyone to care about following it. Most people here don't really seem to care about the English language more than growing.

I'm not complaining about it. Had you read the first post carefully you would have seen that I said I was just offering up a bit of information for people to see so that they might be able to implement it into their posts.

I never said that anyone had to follow these rules. I just think that people generally don't know or have never been given the opportunity to clearly understand the correct usages.

As I said "I hope people don't think I'm being a dick." Most people are happy to learn the correct usages so they can appear more astute when using the English language.

Besides if a person doesn't like something, the best way for them to change it is to face it head on. What better way to do that in this instance than to offer friendly advice. I teach because I care! I care about the people using the language and I care about the language. ;-)

Also, if you didn't notice, that's why I put this particular topic under Toke n Talk as opposed to the growing section of the forum.

Surely you don't expect people to improve their spelling just for the Toke n Talk discussion forum. I sort of taking your idiom of "it drives me mad" as a complaint. I didn't mean to be perceived as a dick either, just stating my personal opinion. :)

Get firefox and install the dictionary/word checker.

it's just like Word, comes up with a red line under incorrect spellings.

If you have this and don't use it.. well you're a fool! :D

Again. . . I don't expect people to do anything. It's just advice that is offered up so that people can "know". "Knowing" is half the battle!
