You're talking about the "perched water table", or PWT.The problem with adding a layer of any type of aggregate as a bottom layer is you move the most moist part of your medium closer to your root ball, that's the advantage of fabric pots they breath all over not just through the top layer so the root mass dries out more evenly.
I think where a lot of people get confused is by thinking aeration and drainage are the same thing when they are 2 different qualities. A soil with a high sand content can have good drainage but not have good aeration.
Yep I'll have a read mate cheersThere's nothing wrong with adding perlite to coco. In fact, I think that's what most people use.
But there's nothing wrong with running straight coco either. I've done it and it works fine. You just don't have to feed as often.
If you've got a few hours to kill, lots of good stuff here:

You won't get trouble if you use the drip clean properly and if you have issues it won't be from salt buildupI like drip clean for maintenance and florakleen if I hit trouble
That's one thing I read last night coco yepCoco and Perlite mixed is proven to outperform straight coco
Fucken more air to the rootball! And that’s what I was getting to..(took the long route that’s for sure)

, then what purpose is there for adding perlite?
Fs it’s used for BOTHThat's one thing I read last night coco yep
But can u correct me if I'm wrong ?
Perlite is more beneficial to coco for airflow etc not primarily for drainage?
Or is it a bit of both ?
I know we use perlite for aeration and drainage in soil but I thought drainage in coco should be ok unless its aged a bit ?
That looks informative mate I'll read up later
what about holidays lolDon't fucken move near me
Maybe it comes down to watering n abit like if ur shit like me then perlight would in my case our perform or something where as I’d guess with ur grow things are a lot more dialed in but congrats on the big yieldI’m having the debate about perlite with hubby atm as he keeps critisising me for not using perlite. I just pulled 29oz off one plant in STRAIGHT COCO ffs!!
Interesting to know how much adding perlite would have “outperformed” that result
From my experience adding Perlite which doesn't hold moisture you reduce the total volume that the pot will hold and it creates small air pockets because of it's shape so it may help a little with drainage but I agree it's main purpose is aeration. That's one thing I read last night coco yep

We cant be 100% right ALL the timeFs it’s used for BOTH
You'll work it out one dayAnd that’s what I was getting to..(took the long route that’s for sure)
