Pelosi Mocks Ocasio-Cortez "Green New Deal"

by Tyler Durden

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) flipped her dentures at the "new face of the Democratic Party," Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), as the freshman congresswoman unveils the final draft of her ambitious "Green New Deal" legislation.

"It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive," Pelosi told Politico on Wednesday before Ocasio-Cortez released the plan.

"The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?"

Pelosi's comments come after the 29-year-old Ocasio-Cortez was excluded from the new Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

Ocasio-Cortez is rolling out the "Green New Deal" with Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), which she says calls for a "national, social, industrial and economic mobilization at a scale not seen since World War II and the New Deal," and is "a wartime-level, just economic mobilization plan to get to 100% renewable energy."

The plan also aims "to promote justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression of indigenous communities, communities of color, migrant communities" and other "frontline and vulnerable communities."

Ocasio-Cortez's plan, which has several doesn't outline specific policy proposals (they'll "work it out" we guess), and promises grandiose measures using broad brush strokes such as achieving "net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition for all communities and workers. Everybody gets a job, clean water, healthy food, and "access to nature," whatever that means.

Where it does get slightly more specific, the resolution, obtained by NPR, mandates among other things (via NPR):

  • "upgrading all existing buildings" in the country for energy efficiency;
  • working with farmers "to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions... as much as is technologically feasible" (while supporting family farms and promoting "universal access to healthy food");
  • "Overhauling transportation systems" to reduce emissions — including expanding electric car manufacturing, building "charging stations everywhere," and expanding high-speed rail to "a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary";
  • A guaranteed job "with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations and retirement security" for every American;
  • "High-quality health care" for all Americans.
For a deeper analysis which we noted earlier, click here.

Former Vice President and terrible prognosticator Al Gore has thrown his support behind the plan, saying in a statement that it marks "the beginning of a crucial dialogue on climate legislation in the U.S."

"Mother Nature has awakened so many Americans to the urgent threat of the climate crisis, and this proposal responds to the growing concern and demand for action," said Gore. "The goals are ambitious and comprehensive – now the work begins to decide the best ways to achieve them, with specific policy solutions tied to timelines."

This morning, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released an overview of the Democrat “Green New Deal” which threatens "a massive transformation of our society."

Below are the details of the proposal.

Rebuild every single building in the U.S.

“Upgrade or replace every building in US for state-of-the-art energy efficiency.”

Will end all traditional forms of energy in the next ten years.

The Green New Deal is “a 10-year plan to mobilize every aspect of American society at a scale not seen since World War 2 to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.”

Plans to ban nuclear energy within 10 years if possible.

“It’s unclear if we will be able to decommission every nuclear plant within 10 years, but the plan is to transition off of nuclear and all fossil fuels as soon as possible.”

Build trains across oceans and end all air travel!

“Build out highspeed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary”.

Don’t invest in new technology of Carbon Capture and Storage, just plant trees instead!

“We believe the right way to capture carbon is to plant trees and restore our natural ecosystems. CCUS technology to date has not proven effective.”

Mandates all new jobs be unionized.

“Ensure that all GND jobs are union jobs that pay prevailing wages and hire local.”

May include a carbon tax.

“We’re not ruling a carbon tax out, but a carbon tax would be a tiny part of a Green New Deal.”

May include cap and trade.

“…Cap and trade may be a tiny part of the larger Green New Deal plan.”

How much will it cost?

No estimate of the total cost of implementing the Green New deal is offered by Ocasio-Cortez.

However, as Ocasio-Cortez admits, “even if every billionaire and company came together and were willing to pour all the resources at their disposal into this investment, the aggregate value of the investments they could make would not be sufficient.”

She does provide one estimate that the cost to “repair and upgrade infrastructure U.S. infrastructure” alone will cost “$4.6 trillion at minimum.”

How will it be paid for? Don’t worry about that.

Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t provide any insight into how the trillions of dollars in spending will be paid for other than claiming, “The Federal Reserve can extend credit to power these projects and investments and new public banks can be created to extend credit”.

But as Ocasio-Cortez says, “the question isn’t how will we pay for it, but what will we do with our new shared prosperity”.

trump is poised to sign payday loans okay at 400% APR..maybe that's what wilbur ross meant when he suggested federal workers 'get loans' in lieu of their paychecks.

remember..'negotiation not investigation'- so catchy.

still winning!

so i think to get on a betting site and put a few hundred on whether the gov't will be shutdown again 2/15 might be a good play.

And you think the plan is good? Talk about the epitome of gullibility.
Have you even had a look at her non-binding resolution or do you get your opinions fed to you by Hannity?

Cortez is only saying what is true and obvious. That global warming will cause economic disaster and displace millions of people. That the answers to this problem are systematic changes and not just twiddling with energy supplies. The only part of the document that should surprise anybody is that a politician came out and said so.

It's also a recipe for investing in good jobs that build up our infrastructure and not tax cuts for large corporations don't invest it in jobs creation but waste the windfall by buying back shares.

I live in Interior Alaska. Check the temperature for Fairbanks. Well above 0 and not normal. Until the last 10 years when anyone living here can recall the changes. The Trump administration kept issuing drilling permits during the shutdown. They had to. It's +20 @ my cabin right now. This is not good for ice roads. Especially in making any new ones. For every rig. It's the only time of the year to get equipment there. The permafrost is melting so quickly roads heave regularly.

The water temperature and pH of the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas as well as the Arctic Ocean are changing and the fisheries in them are changing. Algae blooms for the first time ever in the Arctic Ocean starting within this decade.

Numerous Native villages have had to be relocated inland due to erosion. A lack of sea ice has never been seen for such long periods.

2 frigging Princess cruise ships went from Seward AK to NYC. No icebreakers needed. We know about climate change here. Something has to be done.

So these corporations that only want to buy back shares are not going to be the ones building this infrastructure? The government is going to take care of all of that too? OMG
