If you have stranded wire, there's a chance that you may miss some. some may get pushed aside when you jam them in the connector, or broken when you strip the wire.

Soldering flows into the nooks and crannies and makes good connections.

Heat shrink is like a rubber tube that you slide over the connection (put it on before you connect the wires ;) ) then you hit it with a heat gun or a torch from far away and the heat makes it shrink around the connection. Marine grade is just more water-proof, which would help in a humid environment.

I was on a ship - not an electrician, but you got to help out with or at least see what other people were paid to do. (and get them to help fix your broke stuff)

Soldered with marine grade shrink tubing then sleeved is the proper way, in my opinion. Also, note that I put a female end on this so if I wanted to buy a 25 foot power cord I could easily hook it up, or a 1 footer for that matter. Or maybe a two from one for more flexibility, yes my shrink tubing job wasn't very good on the splitter.
