I would tend to agree it's a lot more of a marketing thing than anything else. Why would someone grow a strain that is marketed to finish in 12 weeks when they can get 1 that says done in 8 weeks. What I feel it comes down to is trail and error with educated guesses until you can actually see and sample the harvest. But I also use clones and grow inside so im sure it's different for others. Again im no expert but that's just been my experience. The hardest part isn't the grow it's knowing when it's done.
Yeah I think we probably lost a lot of good long runner strains due to the way the markets work. Ironically it's the smokers faults as most won't pay more for long runners so it's inevitable that growers and breeders lean heavily into short runners on the whole. If for example the price of a pound was dictated by the amount of weeks it took to flower, we'd see a whole different world of strains. Eventually it may get that way, like wine.
