WHY OH WHY are you guys putting CO2 to the roots?

Roots want O2, leaves want CO2.
What am I missing here? must be something. sorry.

Yes. NO PLANT uses O2, at ALL. O2 is a waste product of anything that uses photosynthesis. CO2 to the roots helps aerate them, which is necessary for healthy roots in a hydroponics system. You can do this in soil as well, it'll be of great help by keeping the soil aerated and well-drained.

But roots won't use CO2. The Stomatas use the CO2.

i wasn't gonna say anything but since you did i will too........were did you get the information. roots totally need o2, aerateing the solution is adding o2, how many hydro reses can you find with a air pump to oxygenate the water on this site, prolly just about evryone why use h2o2, why use air pumps, to put o2 in the solution cause the roots need it. show me the information that says they need co2. where did you learn this.

Using this bucket system just makes its easier and cleaner to have in the room with your res. I have seen personally what happened when i added co2 to my res. But this was in combination with my air stone which runs 24/7 and without that then the co2 wouldnt make a damn bit of difference.

3 plants, 3 seeds. Proves zilch. My brother is 6 inches taller then me. Grew p under same conditions/meals. For an analogy. Clones, baby, clones for valid results.

Progress so far, some photies below.

I am still waitin for more tubings to arrive, have to stop here.
Finding the outer containter is quite a task, most shops have it but with no lid, settled with a touch open bin (I went for it because it has a flat top (stackable)).
I have used 4 x 2 Litres bottles, as it seems easlier for me, an empty ice-cream tub jarred nicely in between.
(there is height and space to step it up to 8 bottles by addin a shelf.)
Will start with 4 and see if there are enough pressure for a continuious bubbling.
the last 2 photies is the 'Check Value'-the red bit,
and the 'Bubble Counter'.

Looking good to go soon

It's really not the O2 or CO2 that helps in a soil situation, it's the fact you're aerating the soil for beneficial bacteria to do their job. The plant itself really doesn't use it, but the bacteria around the roots that help fix nitrogen for the plant do.

Sadly the sites i've visited are split between saying use o2 or use CO2.

As a former Hort. Sci. teacher, I must say for the roots, for the aerobic bacteria that fix nitrogen, you'd be better off using O2. In soil, anyways.

I've never bothered to deal with aerating a hydro setup, as I always did the run, and change every day. No need to aerate.

Nice man, Things are looking good. Let us know how it goes after you get the bubble counter connected. It might blow the glue seals because the check valve takes too much pressure to get through. I would blow through the check valve and see if you think the glue on the tops could take the pressure it takes to blow through. good luck

It taken a while but it's up and working, .

Still waiting for the co2 tubing to arrive , (lost in post, resend, but they are gonna send a free check value with the missing tubing.

I couldn't wait any longer, So I went out and got some normal tubing, and hooked it up.

At first I filled it to 75% full per bottle and the stuff got everywhere

A few attemps later fill up to 50% of each bottle it is stable and no smelly stuff going up the tubes, and the bottle counter is bubbling continiously. It have been running overnight and it is still going good, no mess, only lots of bubbles

any how here are some pics

I have used clear Silicon ( it stinks ) instead of Glue for the bottle top, it is holding the pressure just now, no sign of poping off, and I did it for both top and inside of the cap.

I have got the diffuser, but I have decided not to use it this time, as the nute I am currently using, states very clear that no oxygen or air pump to the nutes, or else..........at your own risk..
I have the diffusers, so will try it out one day and maybe can do an experiment with clones .

Delivery method:
I have just attached the end to a hoop using a T bar for airlnes, (you could see them in the pics here and previous post, they are the blue little things). I have just used a large pin and put holes in the hoop, enough holes so that not too much pressure build up in the DIYco2 system. The hoop of tube is light enough to sit on top of the ladies, co2 slowly falling down into the ladies below.

Hope it stay okay for 2 weeks before I have to change it. Thx again for this great post Hydrokronics.

roots use oxygen not co2 period

oots require Oxygen to breathe and low levels are the main cause of almost all root diseases. Both soil and hydroponic plants often fall prey to the same syndrome although it is rarely recognized as what it really is. Hydroponic crops often fail due to "root rot" and soil crops succumb to "over watering." The real cause of both these problems is a shortage of Oxygen at the root zone. In a soil system the soil consists of particles, a film of water on the particles and air spaces between the particles. When too much water is put into the soil the air spaces fill with liquid. The roots will quickly use up what Oxygen is dissolved in the water, if they haven't drunk enough of the liquid to allow air back in to the soil spaces they will stop working. In this situation roots will start dying within twenty-four hours. As the roots die the plants ability to drink water and nutrients will decrease, this will cause symptoms of nutrient deficiencies (mostly pale, slow, weak growth), and strangely they will start to wilt like they don't have enough water. It is easy to make a fatal mistake at this point and add more water.

Okay, no co2 in res, so how about raising the res temp to 28c during flowering would this help to increase growth and yield?

In the setup I uses, the roots are sprayed (at an optinal rate so that roots get air too) and the water is then drain back to the res below 24/7, the roots compartment is seperate from the rez, so hopfully no problems with lack of oxygen to roots.

i know this thread is old but its a really good idea. i just wanted to say to anyone reading it.
DO NOT FEED THE ROOTS CO2; DO NOT PUT CO2 in the res. put above plants. roots and res like o2.

demoreal is right. The enzyme which fixes carbon dioxide is called Rubisco. This is not produced in the roots, as photosynthesis is not active in roots (no light). Photosynthesis produces the energy that drives the process.

you could always add a tin of tomato paste to the mix to fed the yeast and some lemon juice to bring down the ph. bringing down the ph in the mix will mean less chance of bacteria , found this hint on another site, guy had been home brewing for 30yrs. was just one of the recipes he gave.
this is a add to the mix already given by OP

i would run it to the top of the grow and then let it fall rather than adding to res. add a valve to the line to control release to. and so you can shut it off.
no point giving co2 at night, the plants will be producing there own.
