Why are so many new growers choosing blurple/led over hps/mh??

What is the smell like? My mate grew over a KG of NL from RQS with a 1200 viparspectra, but he said it never started to smell, and even after the drying process it didn't.

He has since done grows with HPS and says his tent stinks even with a carbon filter.

He has given me the vipar, but after seeing the reviews, I have bought a HPS instead. Might use the vipar for a veg tent in the future.

Them not smelling was likey the genetics, and nothing to do with the lights.

You must get cheap power where you're at @.Smoke. 2.6K x 12h/day x 30d/mth x 25¢/kwh = $234/mth for me but I rarely have more than 1K going. Just scored 3 used sets of 600W digi ballasts, Hortilux SHPS bulbs and reflectors for $60 each. Try to find the equivalent in LED for that price. Decent LED ain't cheap and I wouldn't live long enough to recoup the initial price thru power savings I bet.

Were I much younger and planned on long term growing I'd get into DIYing my own custom COBs tho.

Might use the vipar for a veg tent in the. well I'm on the 12th week and she smells like a chemical diesel very very strong the 6 inch carbon filter takes care of the smell other than inside the closet when I open it I smell her little bit when I take her out of the closet she stinks up my room fast I like the light shit you only going use in veg hahaa give the tc 1200 to me lmao see what I can do with the tc900 I can only think what I can do with the 1200

Was just wondering what made you all decide to go with your lighting choice?

I'm pretty knowledgeable about electronics (10yrs working on them in the air force). I did a TON of research before I started growing back in June. Knowing what I do, I came to the conclusion that for me to be happy with LED I would either have to DIY or spend a crap ton of money. I was never interested in the blurples once I figured out the whole "1000W=200 actual watts" deal with them. So to me the easiest choice was to go with the tried and true old school HPS/MH so I could focus more on learning about how the plant grows instead of spending most of my time trying to get the perfect vpd, or be worried about whether I needed to add this red spectrum or that blue one.

I am running 2.6kW of HPS and at my current electric rate, that's about $115 a month. Way less than what I was paying for my weed.

So again I ask,
What made you all choose blurple/led over (what seems to be the easier way) of hps/mh?

They choose blurple because they are misled by companies bs marketing, look at black dog led, 2 grand for 600 Watts lmao, their marketing game is hella strong though. Diy led is the only way to go if you go led, Samsung diodes or trustworthy knockoff. Led is supposed to be about cost efficiency, if it can't be justified taking everything into account including initial cost then it just isn't worth it.

Cali Lightworks in a commercial setting will recoup their cost over hps just in electricity to the lighting units before their 5 year warranties expire. Not to mention the thc, cbd, terpene profiles are much stronger under led and much easier for an indoor grower who doesn’t want supplemental co2/ac. Cheers

What's the cost on the fan and air-cooled hood? Plus the replacement of those air-cooled hoods those don't come for free those costs have to be factored in it could probably double the cost of running hps vs the cheapest hood available... I was really hoping someone would try to say this I love when hps guys try to act like all this extra stuff is free. Oh yeah also how many watts is the fan that has to be added to use the light? Maybe like 100w? You can go ahead an add that onto the power draw of the lights before figuring out gpw that 100w of air cooling is already almost an 10 percent increase of the original wattage of that light

Not sure why you are jumping at me. My 1k hps and single 6 inch cooling fan only cost me $35 a month thanks. Air cooled hoods never have to be replaced, I'm not sure what world you grow in, but mine looked like new after 10 years of use. Yeah you have to replace bulbs I know. I understand all the variables. My comment was about the fact that air cooled hoods are effective when using HID lighting.

I've said many times on this subject that my next light will be a top tier LED. I think the best light is the one that works in each specific garden. I personally recognize the benefits which can be had from LED lighting though.

lol yes you can get bad genetics from any seed. Just because you bought good seeds from a good bank does NOT guarantee that every plant will be a winner. Genotypes and phenotypes will both effect the specific results achieved from any seed popped.

Sorry maybe I got aggressive my overall point is you added cost and power draw without addressing it. Running a fan just to cool the light adds power to that light. Lest say led is 30% more effecient now. then for hps you add 10% in power to air cool another 5% for losses through the glass of the hood now the led is 45% more effecient and you spent an extra 50% on that hps setup because of the cost of the fan and aircooled hood now your at a cost point that makes the led look alot better.

Have you used led before?
Air-conditioning isn't a luxury i personally have. Went with hps myself after using led, because i was using extra watts to heat my space. Hps i don't, for the same amount of energy. Fyi it's still too hot most summer without aircon regardless.
Power is 37c/kwh for me, saves me hundreds a bill. If I was using aircon during summer, it would only add up to more.
Most LED's have a heat sink as well.

You make bold claims and mention science, so where is the data? Studies, watt for watt comparisons, temps, operating temperature, PAR output etc.
I have none of this, only what i've experienced first hand. So i'm politely asking you to show the science, because you made me curious when you mentioned it, and I thought i might learn something new.

Every grower's needs are different, light included.
