Is anyone coming from 1000w mh/hps that is getting similar or better results with LEDs?

Its only the reflector and unit being cooled, put a thermometer under the glass of a 1000w hid and it should warm up a lot.

I never got how leds were any cooler though, same amount of light still same to the plants heatwise. Everyone says leds so hey why not try them or a small version see how they work out cant be that bad.

Understand. I think I'm just spoiled from running air cooled hoods. I ran 2 ducted 1000w digilux at full blast with a hyper fan at no more than 60% power and could put my hand on the bottom of the glass or anywhere on the fixture, as it was only warm. I guess my quandry with LEDs is they don't have the ability to be cooled in such a way.

Typically they don't need to be air cooled, but there's a company called ChilLED that started out with the concept of air cooling , they were very nice lights, but I don't think they continued with the air cooling aspect.. They make bar lights now.

Reason you don't see many air cooled is we usually run warmer air temps with LED, they don't heat the space as much and don't heat every surface the light hits as much as HPS spectrum, lots of people add heat to their rooms too so having an air cooled LED , like a hood is a bit counter productive. Though obviously there are places where it would still be a bonus.

You can very easily convert an air cooled hps hood to LED by removing the glass and replacing it with a 3mm sheet of aluminium and then mounting all the led strips or boards to that. Since most of the heat comes straight out of the top it will go into the hood and be swept away by the airflow.

That last statement is actually a good idea about air cooling quantum boards. Hell of a lot more efficient than computer fans just moving the heat into the space. I'm still rocking a portable AC and live in an overall warmer climate, so try to keep my flower outside the scope of the hottest parts of the summer. I'm also running larger hydro sites so need to keep humidity in check.

Sounds like you would defo benefit from air cooling then, save you on the AC bill.

Why not try getting the biggest hood you can, not an expensive one cuz you will be modding it anyway. Then figure out which strips would work best on the dimensions of the hood.

Its a shame HLG are not doing the old V1 boards like they were a while back for $29 each.. Because that would of been a treat.

Only down side is the even spread of light coverage compared to say a bar light.

Its something I almost got into a while ago as far as manufacturing . But im in Europe and we just don't need to be air cooling LEDs.

There is also the option of water cooling LEDs too.

No Im in an unfriendly state, and the most Ive really ever posted is photos of a few buds, and seed collection.

Ours is just a small operation, and we dont use any automation, and also water by hand. Medium is Promix BX, and food is

4-20-39 base formula
Epsom Salts
0-52-34. Monopotassium phosphate.. In an 8 weeks strain we use this in weeks 2.5-4, and then bump up more Epsom Salts in weeks 5-6, then back of to around the same basic strength as week 4, but No MPK.

We also gro large plants, in large containers, because of plant numbers.
1 strain we have. Mr Nice Super Silver Haze will produce at least 20oz per plant in a 20 gallon container with 6-7 weeks veg under 1000w Hortilux HPS. We start seeds, and rooted clones under Hortilux 1000w usually. At a best we get 24oz per plant.

At the moment we are only Vegging with the 1700e, vs 1000w Hortilux and in a month or so will try it in flowering. Seems to work as well as HPS for veg.

This is one branch from a tree we grew. It was 56 grams dry, and off the stem. Plant produced 24oz. This is also no CO2, and is in an open room. Not a tent. We do have really good fresh air flow, and keep fans running 24 hours a day, even when lights are out. We also shake our plants physically to make them develop stronger stems, and branches.

We also Bend our plants over at an early age to grow horizontally. All the side branching becomes huge branches. We also dont top, and rely on stretch to produce more branching. Mr Nice SSH can stretch up to 4x-6x depending on pheno.

Branch is on my guitar case, and is almost 2 feet long.

I also do larger plants but in hydro. That is a nice branch there. I never did a lot of sativa dominant but ran destroyer which is 100 sativa

A lot of people I see are only vegging with LEDs. All things optimal, I still think HPS gives the biggest harvest/quality per SF. But I'm anxious to see people's flower results in a controlled LED grow. I'm just trying to get away from the energy usage and maintain a quality/yield that's near hps. Feels like I'm laboring to get convincing that LEDs are better overall. This has been going on for some months now

I'm liking your methods as I do 28 gallon sites, but in a rdwc. Which is another reason with trying to keep heat down and humidity. I've never ran a full sativa through flower. I made a mom out of destroyer which is 100 sativa and it was amazing how much different it grew than my others. Never got around to flowering it tho cause plant count.

Those are some nice buds. I know sativa dominant stretch more and I'd like to see your method in action. You've clearly been at it a long time and I know you have much wisdom from the years. My hats off to you.

Do you have any varieties you would recommend as well as a breeder for sativa?

Mr Nice Super Silver Haze is one of the best structured plants Ive even seen.

Swami Organic Seeds has some Sativa hybrids. Old School stuff.

I also like Connoisseur Genetics Super Silver Sour Diesel Haze, not quite as big as a producer as the Mr Nice SSH but is good stuff

Not sure what Swami still has in stock, but here are some of his offerings. Many being polyhybrids need to be searched through to find what you want, but there is some really powerful stuff n these genetics.

Though not Sativa dominant, I really love the Blue Orca Haze. One just needs to go through some plants to find the very best ones. One we found 5 years ago, and kept as a mother is a Menthol Bubble Gum, with Hash notes, and lung buster. 4-5 hours high. Rock hard buds when dry.

The NL5/Haze is also potent, and most is long flowering. One of these we kept is a 100 day flowering plant. Ive also got a bunch more of his genes, but havent growin them out yet.

Bad photos but the first few are the BOH, Bubblegum leaning.

The Last 2 are an NL5 leaning pheno and you can tell which is which as the NL5 leaner has more leaf, and a different color but is crusted with resin.
The bubblgum pheno also has alot of resin, but the glands are much smaller, and harder to see. I doesnt look as resinous, but it is under a scope.

Less heat means less light, i can take light from one end of the spectrum and its energy is pretty similar to the other.

Its easy to say or post but the maths are not in favour of leds over hid. Light two different color lasers, both be pretty similar in temperature.

See why i dont get you or leds much, your reductions in heat do not satisfy the maths one single bit - is that why leds have such bad reputation for lies over the years?

I just changed over 4 of 7 1K HPS Jupiter 6 hooded fixtures to 1 HLG 550 Lm301B and 3 custom boards built with Lm301H Samsung and driven by Mean Well drivers. These put out a bit more light energy then the HLG and the heat has gone down in the room by about 17 deg F and the cooling set up runs significantly less then before. I don't have to run cooling lines between them and that save me electric too. Not to mention the 52% reduction in the power used to run the lights them selves.

The only loss reported by my friend whom turned me on to these custom made boards? His plants don't color up like they used to. We both say "So what?" with all the benefit's.

While mine have just gone up and some of them are over plants being harvested. It's the one's with new plant under them I'm watching the most.
Tiome will tell and I'm just about to post the room as a side by side of LED equivalent vs 1K HPS.

This is a bloom room ONLY and I have now real plans at this time to swap the T'5s out of the veg room. I'll likely change the other bloom room over next too. An increase in profits of over $1K a month......

Heat from these boards are WAY more manageable then HID in the form of 1K and more so over DE HID.

Be on the look out for this thread - It should be posted today or tomorrow. Once I can pry my work at home wife's fingers from the PC.

Nice ones! NL5xhaze was another that I had picked a mom for but didn't get the chance to flower. It grew very similar to the NL5 I was actually able finish to flower from Female Seeds. That was one of the few variants that had a few "weeding out". It definitely benefits from a long cure. The haze variant had the same wide internodal spacing and leaf structure. The NL5xhaze cross is actually the one strain I see from year to year that doesn't lose its legendary status among cannasaurus, or will be running along side whatever the new 30% strain is. But I've come to the conclusion it's not all thc.

May I ask, when choosing your stock plants, do you finish say, 5 phenos through flower and watch the growth and test the smoke, or is there other variables that you are looking for following the seedling being transplanted to its medium? I'll usually pop 3 or 5 and choose 2 from that after about 4 weeks based on growth rate, a little stress tolerance and smell. Then narrow it down to one. But unfortunately my space does not allow me to finish flowering different phenos of one strain. Also, I'm using feminized seeds so I know I'm not getting the best potential outcome. But again, that's because space.

I will soon add a smaller 5x5 so I can pick and choose seeds. I'm a good tester and am open for testing :)

Just started using 2 roi680e's a couple months ago havent had a harvest off them yet. I have a couple pretty reliable sources telling me with all other factors being in check and a good producing strain to expect upwards of 3 lbs per fixture with co2. Realistically I'm hoping for somewhere between 1 and 2 with how I have things set up. Seems like pretty good fixtures as long as height isn't an issue.
Growers Choice was the other I was looking at. 3 lbs a light seems like a very ambitious claim for them to make. Even with C02, only so much bud can optimally grow per s/f. I would be happy with 1.5 at a 680w draw. Any more is a gift. When you say height, are you meaning they put off a lot of heat directly over the canopy? How is the heat on them? I'm curious to see your final results.

Yeah that's kinda what I thought about the yields as well.
As far as height issues the one thing I noticed is the manufacturers hanging height isnt accurate. According to GC hanging height is12"-24" above the canopy at 100% power no co2 and as close as 8" with co2 . I run co2 in flower and no matter what I do I have to run the light at 80% power 24" or it gives the leaves light burn. So just beware of the additional height needed if you go with these lights.
The fixture still puts out a good amount of heat. Just the other day had some electrical work to do so I shut down my mini split and rooms for a couple hours. Ended up turning all my lights back on and forgot the ac. Came in the next day and it was 85° in my rooms. So they still get warm but with an hps it would have been well over 100.
Yeah I've been vegging these ones for over 3 months now so Im getting pretty curious about the results as well.

Thanks for the input. This gives me a better idea on the roi. The tops of my sites are exactly 5' from my ceiling and I do large plants horizontally. So at best I would have them pushed down to 30" tall - leaving me with 30", minus the vertical space of the light to play with. So those would maybe be out of the question. Looking forward to your results.

I find this claim rather incomplete. Not to mention it feels more like opinion then truth. Trust me here, if it was true,,,I WOULD know of it.
After growing for 46 years and coming from a time when all we had was the sun.
Wandering through bulb lighting as it developed.
I took time and research to follow just what LED was doing as it developed a foot hold. checked claims and finally, AFTER watching a close friends HLG applications. I discovered my source and jumped in the LED pool!

Supply this idea as applied from some link please. I want the actual science! NOT your interpretation of it....

Why do you think I'm going to post an informal side by side.....
Comes out this evening BTW...

This is not true. If it were, then there would be no such thing as energy efficient light bulbs. The reason incandescent bulbs are less efficient than CFL and LED is because 90% of the energy used to illuminate incandescent bulbs is going out to the heat produced by the bulb. I think you are confusing the fact that less watts = less heat.

Anyone trying to provide a real SBS here gets my props.! Not an easy place to do it & can get overwhelming depending on the products or where the fan crowd lie.
Goodluck! Keep is posted!

Yes, IR emitted plays a big rols as well. Bulbs have it , leds don't, basically.
A nice balance is what's needed.
