Fan hum

Anyone know how to get rid of the fan hum?
I hear it next door and drives me crazy when trying to sleep - not the actually fan whooshing, just the hum that goes with it.
I have one of the dirt-cheap speed controllers and unsurprisingly, doesn’t do much to help the hum lol.

Would a more expensive speed controller fix this? Or a muffler?

I have insulated ducting would this help? If so where would it go?
This is my airflow set up:
Carbon filter > ducting > exhaust fan > ducting > window

if its on a controller and you can hear it in the next room there is probably something wrong with the fan. has the fan always made the noise? i would maybe investigate coil whine.

It’s one of those things I can only hear when I’m next door on the other side of the wall, weird.
The fan controller is shit, ngl lol. I’ve seen a few posts regarding hum that occurs even with the use of a low quality fan

could be as simple as a cheap fan speed controller. this is the one i use. i have two and theyve both been running for years and never caused any probs.

A friend of mine just got one of those ac infinity 6" fans with the temp and humidity controller. He thinks it's pretty slick. I have a Can fan. When I tried plugging it into my old ipower controller, it hummed so badly that I thought it was broken. I was hearing my fan being powered on and off rapidly because cheap speed controllers just chop part of the ac wave going into the fan. Variac gives a smooth signal is what I gather
