Trump was impeached because he is an idiot and illegally withheld a whistle blower complaint longer than the 2 weeks he was legally allowed to. Triggering an investigation that proved he illegally withheld congressional allocated funds from a vulnerable ally to get a favor of manufactured dirt on a political opponent that just crushed him in this last election. Trump was just not removed from office.

And the investigation was started under a Republican controlled executive branch and further investigated by a Republican led bi-partisan senate committee.
