It is referred to as a Poal. Mongolian in origin, I believe. It is used to smoke herbs. Those who used it were known as Poal Smokers.

I bow to the noted true original. Dove tailed top. Too many fishing trips or hits. But the top on mine split after years. Was content with loose tolerance mass produced of over 10 years ago. Now feeling inadequate.

I recently had to scrape the dovetail.
Kief was clogging the slide and made opening it less than optimal.

about 15 years later, I met a guy who recognized the pipe as being the work of someone called "Jingles" who sold them at the Eugene Saturday Market

Yup, Randy's. I like them. I'm not good at rolling joints and the metal strips across the papers make it much easier to roll.
