Ya, probably the cheapest gun you're gonna buy. Go to a pawn shop or a gun store that sells used ones if you want a used one. Or buy one from a private party. Also it's probably gonna have the most available ammo. A lot of ammo and shit is hard to get right now. It's crazy. Everybody's out of guns and ammo now since they all are worried about Biden taking all our shit away.

And take it somewhere and shoot it til you're comfortable with it. Even a home safety defense course is a good idea if there's one near you.

Maybe for a squirrel if you get them in the right spot, lol. I've seen a chipmunk take over 10 rounds of 22 cal from a rifle and still walk around. It was sad to see that poor little guy.

@Sateeva has never owned a gun. So he's definitely not a master marksman.
And even if you can shoot. A 22 doesn't have the force to do much. People have been shot in the head multiple times with a 22 and not even realized they were shot. You will know if you're shot with a shotgun.

I believe it would benefit the op to separate the two missions of marksmanship and defense.
For the second, a shotgun or centerfire pistol or carbine are likely choices.
For the first, I concur with @Singlemalt re a .22 revolver. It’ll teach all the gun-handling basics. I would suggest that a good air pistol would make for target training, although the remaining gun skills (carry, draw and aim, tactical reload etc.) would get neglected.
The .22, your protestations noted, is still marginally in the club as a defense round.

For one thing I'm not talking about the OP, I'm talking about @Sateeva. Who knows if the OP is even around anymore.
For another .22 is rimfire, not centerfire.
The .22 isn't gonna stop shit. Even a 9mm doesn't have much stopping power.

I like both the shotgun with rock salt option, and the low-power pistol too. I'm guessing 22 amo must be the cheapest. So I could fire a lot to practice marksmanship.

That gun is closer to an AR15, just with smaller rounds. And that's gonna be hard to find right now.
The .22 is good to learn how to shoot, but it's a tiny caliber. It will be the cheapest rounds though probably. Even though that stuff is hard to find sometimes too. 9mm ammo is only about double what .22 is anymore.
