Geneiac's Breeding Thread

What up RIU?!

I'm starting a breeding project that I'm excited about so I thought I'd document my progress here. I'm working out of a 2.5' x 8' tent with two 330 watt DIY Growcraft x3's. I grow organically in soil using dry amendments.

I've got a lot of ideas for different breeding projects but to really start things off right, I'm going to develop an inbred line to use as the basis for future projects. Ideally this IBL will be an apically dominant, autoflowering (I know, I know) strain amenable to sea of green style grows. Ideally it will be a really fast strain with a lifecycle of 9-10 weeks max and capable of producing at least an oz per plant. Obviously it should be as potent as possible and produce an appealing terp profile but honestly these are traits that I anticipate really dialing in during phase 2 of this project in a few years.

So where am I at? This past Summer I pollinated an auto Stardawg and a Tangie'matic with pollen from a photoperiod sensitive Critical Mass. I had a few males to choose from so I chose the most vigorous male which also happened to have the sweetest terp profile as assessed by the ole finger rub test. I only had one female Stardawg and one female Tangie'matic. Grew them both outside on a sunny porch. The Stardawg was really a pretty plant. Grew to about 4' tall and had compact gassy scented buds. The Tangie'matic had some super resinous bud that smelled of straight citrus but took on a super fox tailed structure, which I'm not a huge fan of. Easily a few thousand dark healthy seeds from each cross.

Now that my latest indoor grow has wrapped up, I have the opportunity to crack a few of these seeds. It was a tough choice but I've decided to plant only the CM x Stardawg seeds. I feel the need to screen as many plants as possible so I ruled out planting seeds from both crosses. I chose the Stardawg cross because the mother was a great plant and the Stardawg bud that I've smoked has given me a really unique buzz that I've enjoyed.

A few days ago I planted 80 seeds, two in each location that will house a plant. These are obviously regular seeds so half will be males and half females, so I'll have 20 of each to screen...a pretty meager phenohunt but the best I can do. Its gonna be real tight in my tent and I anticipate quite the shit show. Not exactly sure how I will handle pollen containment or training at this point but I am planning to keep the veg period real short, probably 4 weeks max, to try to keep some semblance of sanity.

Both males and females will be selected primarily on overall structure with my preference being apically dominant or non-branchy plants. This is an F1 population resulting from the cross of a photoperiod sensitive plant and an autoflowering plant so all plants should be photoperiod sensitive. Critical Mass is a great example of a true F1 hybrid because the parents are distantly related (think different land race strains). My pack came from Mr. Nice. Shout out Mr. Nice. This also means that despite the fact that I'm labelling this as an F1 cross, I expect quite a bit of phenotypic variation in this population, because the Critical Mass alleles were all segregating into different little pollen grains. The Stardawg mother may or may not have been an inbred line so it could have been segregating alleles as well, but I have less information about this strain.

Let the madness begin.

Nine days since planting. 79/80 seedlings are up. I removed the cups yesterday and almost roasted the youngins by having the LEDs set too high. Turned them down as low as they go and they're currently 39 inches above the soil.

Its been a while and the seedlings have been ripping. Its now been exactly 4 weeks since I planted. About half the seedlings emerged after 5 days, and the rest within nine days, so they're all about 3 weeks old. Some bins are pretty filled in so I'm going to flip to 12/12 in a couple days.

Great work will be watching see how turns out....

Very cool. I'll be lookin for a male or two in this population. When I created this population of seeds that I'm growing now, one out of my four males was noticeably the most vigorous and it was also the only one that had a terpy aroma so it made for an easy choice. I've seen some males on this site that are crazzzy frosty...I'd freak out if I find one like that lol

I thinking i wana cross an auto with a photo aswell and then make f2s to see if the auto gene is recessive, as i have seen on here people saying they get autos in the f1 generation aswell...
so im curios to try

Hell yeah man, well definitely follow along if you want to see if that's the case. I'm assuming the autoflowering allele is recessive but seeing is believing as they say. I have my F1 generation from a Photo x Auto and I assume there is no auto lineage in the photo strain. My plan is to create the F2 seed over the next few months, then plant out 30 seeds of the F2 generation into 1 gallon pots. Assuming the auto allele is recessive, I expect about 7.5 autos (half male, half female) in this population. As it will be mid Summer at this point, I'll bring the Autos out onto my porch to open pollinate each other. I can see where the confusion can come from however...imagine if someone was growing a plant that was heterozygous for the autoflowering allele and they had no idea there was an auto in its lineage - it would grow like a photoperiod so then if they crossed it to an auto and got autos in their "F1" generation they would be pretty confused...however the phenotypic ratios would be pretty informative and they could use them to reason out if the autoflowering trait was recessive or dominant, and piece together the puzzle if they wanted.

First day of 12/12 was on Monday.

Seeing as how I want to identify plants that are apically dominant, I did a bit of pruning before the flip on Sunday as seen below...

Pre-Prune:

Post-Prune:

For the most part I left the top two or three nodes, but used my discretion and sometimes left a few more as some bins had more space that could be filled by lateral branches.

I will be watching the plants like a hawk for the foreseeable future. I hope to quickly identify a few stand out males and cull the remaining males. So far only one plant has shown its sex, and it's a female. Surprisingly it's the most vigorous plant in the entire tent...I kind of assumed it was a male as I've watched it inch above its sibs.

Day 6 of 12/12

It doesn't take too long for these males to show themselves. Been watching the plants closely and I've got 27/40 putatively sexed. I'm using a chart to keep things organized, it's posted below as well as a pic of a male and a female and a random shot or two.

One male has caught my attention already, as it has a noticeable hashy aroma already. For those unfamiliar, Stardawg has a weird mix of pungent hashy terps and a weird funky earthy/oniony? aroma...its hard to describe but it'd be fun to try to maintain that nose in my strain. At this point though, my plan is to find 1-3 males that have any mix of desirable traits including apical dominance, vigor, nice terps, ect and move those traits forward by crossing them to about three females with any mix of desirable traits. An open pollination of autos in the F2 generation hopefully creates a plant or two with an awesome mix of all these traits in the F3s...I just need to be a bit broad in my selection criteria this generation and then become more stringent in later generations. Really starting to get nervous about all the pollen that could be flying around so I'm hoping the ideal males show themselves quickly.

The plants in the "rested" bin are ripping at a pace I've never experienced before. Stoked to see results like this in an organic system as I feel like these plants are growing at a pace more typically seen with coco grows. The rested bin is the furthest on the right in the chart so you'll notice that I'm pretty sure 6/8 are females too :bigjoint:

Bad news fellas...

The critical mass x stardawg (auto) cross I planted out and documented here is GARBAGE. All female plants hermed out on me :spew:

I will be adding these plants to the compost pile. I guess I'm glad to learn that this population has a tendency to herm out now, as opposed to in the F2s or F3s...a situation that could have developed if I hadn't tossed em into the deep end so to speak. In the future when I perform a new cross I will plant 8-10 seeds in a single bin to stress them out and see if the population has a tendency to herm before filling my tent and performing a phenohunt.

I'm sure I will get back to breeding at some point but in the short term I've got a pack of Super Lemon Haze F5 seeds from Ethos that I'm excited to pop. I was beginning to think I'd never get the chance too crack em LOL its funny how it goes sometimes.

Be well y'all

It's too bad, you sounded pretty hyped about this. That Ethos recreation of super lemon haze sounds killer, love that they used Jack in the cross. You'll be back to breeding and digging through phenos before you know it lol.

Any news on the Super Lemon Haze f5? I just started germinating a 17 pack a few days ago...Would love to have more info.
