Same guys who poisoned people with a weapon of mass destruction in the UK. Vlad must have a smaller bench of "talent" than we realize, cause the same characters reappear frequently. Also when CNN can knock on the door of one of them in Russia and he actually talks to them, indicates a less than professional level of tradecraft for the assassins at least. Perhaps the assassins are "disposable" though and can easily find open windows in high buildings. Also the GRU seems very aggressive and must be scoring points on the FSB, military intelligence tends to be staffed by more patriotic types.

Political pressure and economic catastrophe can have some effect on Vlad, he doesn't have near as tight a lock on things as the old commies. He has a more open society to deal with now and that entails risks and a certain amount of balancing. His base is dying off like the GOP's and will diminish among the younger people as the Russian economic crises mounts over the coming years. The CIA is monitoring the situation and always will be looking for ways to make it worse, just to return the favor.

Alexey Navalny's life is Putin's 'personal' responsibility, say Russian politicians - CNN

Navalny's life is Putin's 'personal' responsibility, say Russian politicians
Moscow (CNN)Nearly a dozen Russian politicians have published an open letter to President Vladimir Putin, saying that he was personally responsible for the life of Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny, who has been on a hunger strike in a penal colony in the Russian city of Pokrov.

"The state of health of political prisoner Alexey Navalny threatens his life," said the letter, signed by 11 politicians representing several regional parliaments, as they demanded an independent doctor is immediately allowed to visit Navalny.

The opposition figure went on a hunger strike on March 31, demanding "proper medical care" and to be examined by an independent doctor -- something his team claims he has been unable to get in the penal colony in Pokrov.

His allies have been raising concerns about the jailed Kremlin critic's health, saying Navalny "is dying" and his doctors said medical tests showed he's at growing risk of renal failure and heart problems. CNN is unable to independently verify the state of Navalny's health.

"We regard what is happening in relation to Navalny as an attempt on the life of a politician, committed out of personal and political hatred," the letter, which is open for Russian citizens to sign, said. It was first shared and circulated late Saturday night.

"You, the President of the Russian Federation, personally bear responsibility for the life of Alexey Navalny on the territory of the Russian Federation, including in prison facilities - [you bear this responsibility] to Navalny himself, to his relatives, and to the whole world." it said, while also calling for a review and cancellation of all Navalny's criminal cases.

Countrywide protests
The escalating situation has led Navalny's allies to announce rallies across Russia on April 21 in support of him.
"Navalny is now in the colony, his life hanging on a thread," Leonid Volkov, chief of Navalny's staff, said in a joint video with Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Alexey Navalny's anti-corruption foundation (FBK).

"He has been on a hunger strike for several weeks now, demanding medical attention. His condition is critical, and we do not know how much longer he can hold out. But it is clear that we do not have time," he added in the video, which called on citizens across Russia to take to local central squares.

Western countries have also condemned Russian authorities for allowing Navalny's condition to deteriorate. On Sunday, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the Biden administration is weighing options to punish Russia if Navalny dies in state custody.

"We have communicated to the Russian government that what happens to Mr. Navalny in their custody is their responsibility and they will be held accountable by the international community," Sullivan told CNN. "In terms of the specific measures that we would take, we are looking at a variety of different costs that we would impose and I'm not going to telegraph that publicly at this point."

"But we have communicated that there will be consequences if Mr. Navalny dies," he added.

The European Union called on Russia to grant opposition leader Alexey Navalny "immediate access" to a medical professional "he trusts" on Sunday.

"The European Union is deeply concerned about reports that the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny's health in the penal colony continues to deteriorate even further. We call on the Russian authorities to grant him immediate access to medical professionals he trusts," The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said in a statement.

Russian ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin told the BBC in an interview aired Sunday that Navalny is "behaving like a hooligan," but could have a chance at being released from prison early if he "behaves normally."
He refused to elaborate on what would constitute normal behavior.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/15/opinions/russia-sanctions-biden-ghitis/index.html

When pressed by the BBC to answer whether the Russian government was prepared to let Navalny die in prison, Kelin said: "of course he will not be allowed to die in prison. But I can say that Mr Navalny behaves like a hooligan, absolutely, in trying to violate every rule that has been established. His public purpose through all of that is to attract attention, also by saying that today his left hand is sick, tomorrow his leg is sick and all of that stuff."

Addressing critics that say Navalny is not allowed to see his personal doctor, Kelin asked: "How about British prisoners? Do British prisoners request personal doctors?"

"[Navalny] has got the necessary medical treatment and believe me, we will take care of his medical treatment," he added.
France's Foreign Minister said on Sunday his country was "extremely worried" about Navalny's health.

"I consider Mr. Navalny's situation extremely worrying," Jean-Yves Le Drian told public broadcaster France 3. "I note that there is really an authoritarian drift in Russia. The case of Mr. Navalny is the most symbolic, the most striking for the minds," he added.

I really not have a clue about their political system, I just hope the people of Russia get it all figured out. There is no reason for all the turmoil and very real danger for us all.

Exactly, other than political posing there is no real animosity between the people of the US and Russia, i'd prefer that Russia and the US could cool the BS down and begin to reduce our nukes, we'd have enough at even 1/3 the level, it would be a hell of a lot easier w/Putin gone as his nostalgia for what Russia USED to be is the main driver for all the BS he pushes around. The real worry facing the world now are the designs Mr. Xi has in mind, his vision is of Chinese domination of the globe and the promotion of his autocratic style of Govt. A less belligerent Russia w/a more moderate leader would go a long way to assembling a united front to counter the rise of a more hostile China as Mr. Xi has me weary of his Govt in a way I have never felt before. The combination of Putin's mischief and Xi's visions when put together are a serious challenge for the US. Throw N Korea and Iran into the mix and this is a very dangerous decade to negotiate and how all these cards fall is anybody's guess. All I can say is God be with Joe Biden your facing unprecedented challenges.ccguns

It is useful to be illogical at times in conflict, logical thinking is predictable thinking and the unexpected causes apprehension in ones adversary. You are correct, there is no real reason for all this shit, Russia is a vast country with a ton of resources and a relatively small population given it's size. Only Vlad's dreams are causing this shit, but among his base it is a popular vision. Properly managed the country could have an economy several times larger than it has now and the people a higher standard of living and quality of life. Many decades of Stalinist rule have scared the country and it's people psychologically and socially. Vlad was part of the apparatus of control, the KGB and old habits die hard, or in Vlad's case with him.

Fucking with America was a fatal mistake for many and I figure it will be one for Vlad too. Since he attacked America and the western democracies with acts of war, there will be no going back, that train has already left the station. I wouldn't expect mass tank battles in the Crimea, that's not how cold wars are fought. War is a waste of everybody's time effort and money, when China came online it lifted the world economy and a billion people out of poverty, you don't need democracy for capitalism, just responsible government China proved that. They are part of the global economic system now, the one setup after the second world war to prevent future wars through trade and interdependence. Russia never came on board until after the fall of communism and only then to a limited degree. It's why they are particularly vulnerable to the kind of economic warfare I've been describing and the CIA and state department will be exploiting their weaknesses.

Trump's Top NSA Lawyer, Michael Ellis, Ousted After Just 4 Days on the Job. What Was Trump's Goal?

In a story that has remained somewhat under the radar screen, AFTER Trump lost the election, he arranged to install loyalists at the Pentagon and the National Security Agency for reasons that have no obvious connection to our nation's security. Here is the sequence of events that led to the installation and almost immediate suspension of Devin Nunes's former Chief Counsel, 35-year-old Michael Ellis, as the NSA's top lawyer. We need to know from the Biden administration what it has found inside the government agencies Trump decimated.

MOSCOW (AP) — Police arrested nearly 1,500 people Wednesday during a day of demonstrations throughout Russia calling for freedom for imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose health reportedly is in severe decline after three weeks of hunger striking, according to a group that monitors political detentions.

The largest of the protests took place in Moscow, where thousands marched through the center city. Some of the people arrested were seized before the protests even began, including to top Navalny associates in Moscow.

Navalny’s team called for the unsanctioned demonstrations after weekend reports that his health is deteriorating and his life was in danger.

“The situation with Alexei is indeed critical, and so we moved up the day of the mass protests,” Vladimir Ashurkov, a close Navalny ally and executive director of the Foundation for Fighting Corruption, told The Associated Press. “Alexei’s health has sharply deteriorated, and he is in a rather critical condition. Doctors are saying that judging by his test (results), he should be admitted into intensive care.”

Navalny’s organization called for the Moscow protesters to assemble on Manezh Square, just outside the Kremlin walls, but police blocked it off. Instead, a large crowd gathered at the nearby Russian State Library and another lined Tverskaya Street, a main avenue that leads to the square. Both groups then moved through the streets.

“How can you not come out if a person is being murdered — and not just him. There are so many political prisoners,” said Nina Skvortsova, a Moscow protester.

In St. Petersburg, police blocked off Palace Square, the vast space outside the Hermitage museum and protesters instead crowded along nearby Nevsky Prospekt.

Full Coverage: Russia

It was unclear if the demonstrations matched the size and intensity of nationwide protests that broke out in January after Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent opponent, was arrested. Turnout estimates varied widely: Moscow police said 6,000 people demonstrated in the capital, while an observer told Navalny’s YouTube channel that the crowd was about 60,000.

The OVD-Info group, which monitors political arrests and provides legal advice, said at least 1,496 people were arrested in 82 cities — the largest tally being nearly 600 in St. Petersburg.

Navalny’s team called the nationwide protests for the same day that Putin gave his annual state-of-the-nation address. In his speech, he denounced foreign governments’ alleged attempts to impose their will on Russia. Putin, who never publicly uses Navalny’s name, did not specify to whom the denunciation referred, but Western governments have been harshly critical of Navalny’s treatment and have called for his release.

In Moscow, Navalny spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh and Lyubov Sobol, one of his most prominent associates, were detained by police in the morning.

Yarmysh, who was put under house arrest after the January protests, was detained outside her apartment building when she went out during the one hour she is allowed to leave, said her lawyer, Veronika Polyakova. She was taken to a police station and charged with organizing an illegal gathering.

Sobol was removed from a taxi by uniformed police, said her lawyer, Vladimir Voronin.

OVD-Info reported that police searched the offices of Navalny’s organization in Yekaterinbrug and detained a Navalny-affiliated journalist in Khabarovsk.

In St. Petersburg, the State University of Aerospace Instrumentation posted a notice warning that students participating in unauthorized demonstrations could be expelled.

The 44-year-old Navalny was arrested in January upon his return from Germany, where he had spent five months recovering from a nerve agent poisoning he blames on the Kremlin. Russian officials have rejected the accusation.

Soon after, a court found that Navalny’s long stay in Germany violated the terms of a suspended sentence he was handed for a 2014 embezzlement conviction and ordered him to serve 2 1/2 years in prison .

Navalny began the hunger strike to protest prison officials’ refusal to let his doctors visit when he began experiencing severe back pain and a loss of feeling in his legs. The penitentiary service has said Navalny was getting all the medical help he needs.

Navalny’s physician, Dr. Yaroslav Ashikhmin, said recently that test results he received from Navalny’s family showed sharply elevated levels of potassium, which can bring on cardiac arrest, and heightened creatinine levels that indicate impaired kidneys and he “could die at any moment.”

On Sunday, he was transferred to a hospital in another prison and given a glucose drip. Prison officials rebuffed attempts by his doctors to visit him there.

Russian authorities have escalated their crackdown on Navalny’s allies and supporters. The Moscow prosecutor’s office asking a court to brand Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption and his network of regional offices as extremist organizations. Human rights activists say such a move would paralyze the activities of the groups and expose their members and donors to prison sentences of up to 10 years.

Navalny’s allies vowed to continue their work despite the pressure.

“It is, of course, an element of escalation,” Ashurkov told the AP. “But I have to say we were able to regroup and organize our work despite the pressure before. I’m confident that now, too, we will find ways to work. ... We have neither the intention nor the possibility to abandon what we’re doing.”

When we get the average wage down to $100 a month from $400 and cut off their exports there will be more people in the streets. There will be more heat on Vlad from the Oligarchs, many of whom I'm sure are tired of Vlad's spy games and dreams of a reborn soviet empire. They won't complain though or make a peep, just arrange an assassination, top down change is the rule there. If you can't control your neighbors economically, then use military force, and since Russia has an economy smaller than Italy with 144 million people, the nuked up third rate economy can't control shit.

Let's see, good looking, charismatic and courageous, the threat to Vlad has just increased, so he is gonna have to die for sure, but not for awhile. Protests will have a limited effect, Putin has his base and they are a Russian version of Trump's base, they probably are not a majority of the country, but there are enough of them in an undemocratic country to hold power. Significant change will probably come down to mass violence, again.

By putting on the heat economically, perhaps some oligarchs will be pissed off enough to arrange Vlad's assassination. Vlad has attacked almost every western democracy and he now has many enemies, while Joe has many friends and is making more every day. As Stalin used to say, "no man, no problem", applies to Putin as well as Navalny.

MOSCOW – Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny has expressed "pride and hope" after nationwide demonstrations calling for his release amid reports his health is deteriorating.

In a post to Instagramon April 22, Navalny called the thousands of Russians who took to the streets the previous day "the salvation of Russia."

Russian police detained more than 1,700 people during the rallies, including at least 10 journalists, in what Amnesty International described as being part of "shocking crackdown on basic freedoms."

Navalny, 44, has been in custody since January. He has been on hunger strike since March 31 to demand that doctors treat him for severe pain in his back and legs.

In a statement published on the Mediazona website, Navalny's doctors urged him to end the hunger strike, saying that if it "continues even a little longer, we will simply no longer have a patient to treat."

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) called on Russia to release Navalny "immediately and in any event before the next 'human rights' meeting of the Committee of Ministers in June 2021."

Pending his release, President Vladimir Putin's most-vocal critic should be provided with "all necessary medical care, including examination and treatment by a doctor of his choice, and to ensure that his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights and domestic law are fully respected," according to a PACE resolution, which was backed by 105 parliamentarians during a session of the assembly in Strasbourg.

At total of 26 lawmakers from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia voted against the resolution. Those who abstained included representatives from Turkey, Serbia, and one from the Czech Republic.

it appears Putin can learn <tanks leave border, Navalny leave prison>

The troops are leaving but the tanks remain, he wouldn't be able to get them back there if there was trouble. Logistically heavy armor is a bitch to move and takes time, troops can be marched if required, if transport links are cut. The last place I'd wanna be is inside a Russian tank (target) when the shit hit's the fan. Modern battle fields are lethal, the weapons used against tanks seldom miss and are designed to do the job when they don't.

Here is a sample of what the Russians could be up against in the Ukraine if Joe supplies them and other lower cost anti tank weapons used by infantry. There are artillery systems that can with guided gliding munitions can take out targets a hundred miles away as well as other weapon systems made by the Swiss, Swedish and European companies that are simply amazing
How Powerful is Javelin Anti-Tank Missile
