Small lead weights in compost tea. Dump grow?

For a little over a month, small lead fishing weights were used to hold down 2 air stones in 5 gallon bucket brews of compost tea. Yah, realize now not smart. Since cannabis is a heavy metal accumulator, does anyone know if enough lead would have leached from the weights to warrant scrubbing the grow and soil (100% coco, RO water). Is there a way to get it tested by a lab that caters to recreational grows. Cost? Or dump the girls and start over?

You can get the tea tested for lead, no need to even mention cannabis. That would tell you the concentration of Pb in the tea by volume...then you could gauge whether you should toss it. This is more chemistry than im interested in pursuing...chelating ions, humic acid, nitric acid, even ph affects what happens to the lead. you can do a CalMag soil drench and that may oxidize any lead hanging out in the coco and drain it out. Dont reuse that coco.

Heavy metals are going to stay regardless. Id start over. What sort of air stones did you have that floated? I've always used Sweetwater air stones and they're heavy as hell for an air stone.

In the past I’ve had deep aquariums and only had tiny airstones for the time being so I just used a couple elastic bands and attached a rock to the airline until I got a bigger heavier air stone

Edit-Also a month long brew? That’s pretty long, have you been topping it up with molasses?
Or did you mean you’ve used the lead weights for a month with different compost teas?

Tea was brewed for 1-3 days, not 30+ days for a single brew. Most waterings (virtually daily) included tea for 40 days.

Small 1-inch stones, with two and pump enough to brew.

Wondering if I need to dump the fabric pots as well?

So just ordered simple lead test kits that will determine any level; for exact level have to send to a lab. Will test tea and separate test of RO water + the two lead weights. Probably going to scrub the grow regardless of the test results. Sigh.

There ya go...wait for the test kits to arrive...then wash the empty pots in a bucket after the grow is finished and test the run off. If it was me i would do a CalMag wash/rinse of the empty pots and keep them. You didnt make the mistake that long and you didnt have 10lbs of lead in the bucket...did you? Nah ur grow bags should be fine.

They were two 1-ounce weights, ~40 days of tea making, so not huge amount of lead but since I was attempting to do a near 100% organic grow this season, I couldn't offer any of this friends without hesitation regardless of the test results. Can't be 100% sure. Since lead fishing weights are being banned nationally, time to dump my collection from the tackle box. Read some science papers that lead can be bound/leached out with phosphates and pH at 5.5 or less. RO water also is a natural leaching agent, so will soak in that plus CalMag you recommended. CalMag binds to coco, so maybe it will do same to lead. Bags hopefully will have negative residual. Lead also binds to organic matter, which is good and bad for this issue. It's a bit late, but may still have time for another grow (south-facing greenhouse), and will consider getting some autofem seeds as a backup. This was really stupid; I know better.

I think you’ll be fine but go ahead and stress about it if you want to. If a small lead weight is so bad for compost tea then why would it be ok to use for fishing. I mean I use lead fishing weights in the same surf my kids swim in....am I messing up the water doing this?
My compost tea diffuser has stainless steel washers for weight so maybe that’s safer I guess.

Our lead does have an effect. Albeit from mass deposits. OP is consuming less than most homes tap water.

Stainless steel washers or 1/3 of a terra cotta or red brick with a hole in it is the ticket.

Peace.

If you live in Canada, just phone up or email your family doctor for a blood test, and tell him you want the lead test as well. You may as well get everything else tested if you haven't done it in a while. It's all free anyway, and can be setup online by anyone. Just you need to be in person for the blood extraction! LOL

I get my blood tested twice yearly on average because one of my hobbies is casting bullets, and of course shooting them. I learned by the testing that my lead levels increased when I was shooting a lot in indoor ranges, and I didn't shoot my bullets there. It seemed that making bullets by melting down wheel weights wasn't an issue at all. Weird, isn't it?

I don't want to know. The amount of tire weights melted and mini balls, sabots and sinkers I've cast. Sure I'm F'd. But ignorantly still kicking.

LMAO I cast sinkers too. I powder coat them Dillon Blue like my bullets. I find those sinkers work so well trying to catch ol' cats in a river with good current.

RIght now I have about 600 pounds of clip-on lead in ingots, and about 100 pounds of linotype (4 pigs) in my garage. Another 20 pounds of the linotype I'm keeping though, because there are literally dozens of historical local seals and symbols like that I should keep. These were caste locally long before I was born and I'm officially over 60 years old now. I'll just keep them and pass them down after I die instead of melting them down or even selling them.

Our dying ways of basic survival. Crazy what you have. Only 3 full 5 gallon buckets and about 2 dozen batteries. Those are a scary mess that uses a ton of water and baking soda. LOL. Share your skills. Never know.

I stay away from those batteries. Unfortunately you'll find mostly stick-ons for wheel-weights these days. They're almost pure lead which burns off a polymer coating that can give off a lot of bad fumes. Last time I did a melt, I was surprised the neighbours didn't complain because I was freaking out myself. Haha

The shotgunners love that pure lead stuff though.

Moved to cubicle suburbia. Sold sinkers on the Grand River by the pound for good profit. A good 100+#'s of all sizes with swivels in storage. I keep 15#'s in my vest game pouch for traction wading. LOL. Deep fast water snag prone fishing here. And I have a pellet gun if I need to eat now. Police are rarely called for that.

Fools live from corporate hand to their mouth now days. OH BOY! And only just aware of the toxins they have been ingesting for the entire span of their lives. As have we. Glad you are awake. Be safe as I wish all.
