IMO it's a race to use up all the fossil fuels in the world. iv'e been to the middle east: without oil they are just a large a sandbox. then it becomes a battle of the superpowers again. in my lifetime??? nope.

Change is hard. Oil is working now, so it will continue to be the leading fuel for the next 20-30 years. Unless we move to tax levels we reserve for the poor, (lottery, beer and cigarettes) the change will be slow. If we were to slap 100% tax on all ICV's, sales of EV's would take off.
And I've been saying for 20-30 years that oil is not going to run out anytime soon. We are getting better at finding and pumping it.

Not when a fillup is only 20 dollars, takes only 3 minutes and gives you 400 miles of travel.
Time is money. People will pay 30 dollars to watch a new movie rather than wait to watch it for free.

Not to mention the 1000’s of abandoned wells that pepper the land that corporations walked away from. If the true cost of all the shit it causes was added there would be a huge interest in cleaner fuels.

Maybe one of you Elon fanboys can tell me what's so special about him that makes him any different then all of the other Billionaires that everyone thinks are evil. It's like people think he builds these cars or rockets himself and doesn't partner with in an expert in the field to do it for him (and then take the credit).
Also how are electric vehicles going to help us combat climate change when the electricity being generated to power them is still being generated by coal, oil and gas burning power stations. We're just moving the goal posts from the gas station to the arguably more polluting power station.
Sorry i'm in a cranky mood today, but I also don't like Elon Musk, he's just another one of the glorified Billionaires, just as evil if not more.

That's it in a nutshell.
Renewables aren't powerful enough to be relied on for charging cars. They simply don't produce the power. Well, wind does, but that's about it and it's not consistent.
If we don't start biting the bullet and embracing nuclear salt reactors there's really no hope at all of offsetting our carbon emissions. None at all.
Solar is right out. At best, it's an augmentation for lighting and other light duty power usage. It would take an entire acre of solar panels a day and a half to bring the typical electrical car to full charge. They're THAT electrically thirsty.
