so ide appreciate u 2 not talk to me i dun kno what im doin, a 5v adaptor will put out 5v no matter what u hook up 2 it, it wont over heat, the fan will just get less power, and i have a good, cheap, and quiet fan, i paid nothin for it, had everythin in a junk drawer, and took bout a minute to wire, but like i said b4 it all depends on what ur doin, obviously pay attention the first day or so to see wat the temps n humidity are in ur box, but for my short plants and my cfl lights a 5v charger works geat, so dun tell me my setup wont work just bcuz its not the way u have urs hookd up

What is the current rating on your cell charger? 100mA if that (It should be printed on there)? The 12V pc fan I'm running at 12V from an actual PC supply is drawing 530mA (and blowing nice).. Now I'm hooking it up to the 5V terminal which is the exact same potential as your charger right? Its drawing 228mA (and its blowing much less air)..
Thing is 228mA is a giant load to ask a puny charger to try to provide.. Their little soldiers though no doubt.. They'll do their best for as long as they can, but one day when you're relying on them to protect your plants, they'll just drop dead leaving your fan motionless..
Would you put a 1000W bulb on a 400W ballast? Thats pretty much exactly what you're doing..

no not exactly, and these lil things are what tell me you really dont know what your talking about...
Amps (amperage) = volume of electricity
Volts = pressure of electricity
check your power supply it puts out 30000mA so what u said about the diffrence in mA when u switch the volts down doesint make much sence, cuz either way it puts out more then what your fan needs, my fan is .18mA at 12v and my cell phone charger puts out .7mA so again its fine, if u the charger doesint overheat within the few hours of it running its not going to anytime soon, besides the fact that my fan runs within the range of my cell phone adaptor,
now idk how many times ive said that it depends on what u need the fan for if this is right with you, i am not argueein that a drop in 7v will decrease the power of the fan, any moran with half a brain can figure that out, i already said that so stop tryin to make that point, first ur argueein about this then about that n now ur bringin this back, and lastly the comment about the ballest has nothin to do with a cellphone charger, ballests have starters n shit for certain sized lights, so no its not really the same thing, considerin that what im talkin about works and ur tryin to disprove it when u OBVIOUSLY have no clue what ur talkin about, so whats the real reason ur argueein with me? didnt get enuff hugs as a kid

now i have this in my box and it keeps the temp at about 80 degrees n the humidity under 45 percent, and the box is near ppl that dont know about it everyday and nobody has found it, i am gettin ready to put another 5v fan blowin in the other direction on the opposite side of the box, to better circulate the air as my plants are growin, so like i was sayin this setup works great for me, obviously if ur runnin HPS this is not enuff, but for my CFLs n my (maybe) 7 inch plants it works just fine, so if u can pull another reason to why this is not goin to work, let me kno, but ive been runnin this with 1 fan for like 2 months now

Ok dude.. I assure you I know what I'm talking about.. But if your adapter is rated for 0.7A (not 0.7mA, that wouldn't power a fire-fly) then you are right, it should not overheat and die.. Not all cellphone chargers are that beefy though, so I don't want others reading this to hurt their plants because of your attitude..
For the record, the current a DC fan 'attempts' to draw is equal to the voltage applied, divided by the measured forward biased resistance.. Its simple ohm's law applied to a polarity dependant circuit.. And everybody should do this math and compare it against the printed rating if they are not sure their supply can tolerate the load.. The reason I say 'attempts' to draw is because contrary to your ignorance, a DC adapter IS a freaking ballast (do you know what 'ballast' means).. A ballast like that is current limited by the amount of magnetic energy it can hold/transfer before it becomes saturated.. After satuation, anything more you try to pull through it will just result in heating the core pretty much like an induction heater..
And contrary to your claim that it will die quickly, that just isn't always the case.. Alot of electronics can handle being overpowered by quite a bit until that sad moment when they let their smoke out.. A false sense of security is the worst possible scenario..
For the record, I once had a DC apapter that was accidentally absolutely completely shorted for more than a few hours.. When I went to pick it up it was so hot that I jumped my hand away, and when I tested it after it cooled it no longer worked.. I've also had 12V fans and other things running on adapters smaller than I prefer just out of convenience in non-critical situations (like a desk fan), and had them run for weeks to months before dying..
A suitable adapter or PSU is easily obtainable for peanuts.. If you're too cheap/lazy to find one then I'd hate to see how sketchy the rest of your setup is..

i assure you, you dont kno what ur talkin about as much as u claim, u had a vague idea n tried to run with it, n i already stated that i dun kno much about ballasts and that im growin with CFL with built in ballests, look up the schematics online, a ballest has a transformer in it, but its not the same thing, a transformer is a cell charger, and they have these lil things calld air gaps to prevent saturation, thats y ur the ignorant fuck

runnin any charger will kill it eventually... n it all depends on ur definition of greatness... i consider great to be my box keepin the right temp and humidity, creatin air circulation, and remainin undiscovored, its not like its a lil box im hidin... i consider my fan great, usin 12v would decrease the greatness, it would increase RPM, but like i already said, if sum1 cant figure that out theyre braindead, the fan is used to cool sumthin that gets a couple hundred degrees, maybe u should fuck my logic with ur AIDS dick but that seemd like to much to blow directly on my babys

Dude, I was warning you and others that not all fans and adapters like that will work together 'reliably'.. I'm glad you understand this stuff, and I'm glad your charger is sufficient for that fan.. Last tip I'll give you, is that on most fans I've played with, 7-9V is pretty much as silent as 5V, but moves more air..

A pc grow box only added my monthly bill up $15 and its a pretty gentle on my nugs.So maybe you don't need a powerful fan for your nugs.

a 7v fan puts out like 40 percent more then a 5v fan, thats 40 percent louder aswell, besides the fact u were sayin to use a 12v adaptor in the begining, and no u said that it wouldnt work, that it would overheat, most cell chargers are to "puny" n blah blah blah, u wanted to keep assuring me u knew what u were talkin about, comparin it to a ballast n all that bullshit, u took a broad knowledge of electricity(ur prolly 1 of the ppl that end up burnin down their house) and made assumptions about the specs of what we were discussing, and misinformed every1 that reads this thread, thank god i was here to correct u if u knew what u were talkin about u would have explained it all, said it could work, just to be careful, plain and fuckin simple

thats awesome but i dont have 15 dollars, im goin to get a nick bag fronted to me right now lol, my finances are kinda fuckd up latley, and the fan still puttin out like 15 CFM, thus changin all the air in my box more often then once a minute... not tryin to sound like an asshole or w.e i just dont like bein told im iggnorant

For anybody else trying to tweak one of these setups to comprimise between cfm and noise this is rarely the case.. Sound doesn't scale with power that simply.. There are mechanical/turbulance aspects that make it purely a trial & error situation..

n im not urgin ne body to cut corners, i was simply statin that u can use most cell adaptors to wire your fan, its not cutin any corners, its the same diffrence as hookin it up 2 a 12v adaptor... u do it the same exact way... and obviously it will not be as powerful

Though a good value this fan is loud enough to be heard over TV surround sound. Also, frame is of a composite material that breaks easily. One ear with mounting holes for grill broke off when tightening bolts to mount protective grill.
