Heart is not my favorite but I'll eat it.
Liver, bacon, shrooms & onions on the other hand is a straight up delicacy.

I'm a big fan of the high neck shot as no recoverable meat is lost.
Miss that windpipe and yer bumming. However, the high neck not only saves some meat, usually drops them in their tracks and requires no bloodtrail recovery .

Depends. The one you shoot best. Massachusetts has a shotgun only rule, during gun season. Growing up here, was either bow, shotgun, or blackpowder. Which means you generally have to get yourself within 30-50 yds of a whitetail, no easy feat at first.
Now scoped shotguns and sabot rounds extend that range to about 100 yards. And newer inline muzzleloaders can reach out even further, 150 yds+
For rifles, you'd have to ask a rifle hunter. Different strokes for different folks, I'm told.

what ive found, the larger males have a strong smell , the meat stinks when cooking and has a strong taste.

as ching says....you got to cook the shit out out of um.

what i do is put the fresh carcass meat in a ice chest, cover with ice and let ice melt, drain and repeat for a few days.


this sow i shot here, was the smallest of 3 that came in on my feeder.

done ate on her and she is fine.
