What Is Best Soil pH?

I haven't much experience with the Fox Farm soils so I'm just trying to understand them. One one hand, I would like to use my soil, but I am having problems getting the pH where I want it. By blending my neutral soil with Ocean or Happy, I can get it to where I want.

I have several batches of soil and recently started measuring and recording the pH each day to see how long it takes for the soil to attain a stable pH. I have Happy Frog, Ocean Forest, Happy Frog + Ocean Forest mixed together, and some of my soil which has a neutral pH.

If the pH reading is stable for 3 days, I can let it sit and check it a final time when preparing for the next grow.
The problem with HappyFrog or Oceanforrest is that they are low in micronutrients. Yellowing could be an iron issue and there are 4 elements that cause yellowing: Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fe... Ph above 6.5 will cause micronutrient lockout. Also, you don't want to add dolomite during flower because Ca and Mg compete with K and it's referred to your "Base saturation ratio".

Some add a little dolomite or some form of limestone to counter the weeks or months of continuous breakdown of organic matter that lowers the pH. I believe the lockout in soil begins at 7pH, I'm sure you were referring to CoCo grows with that 6.5ph. The first nutrient to get locked out at that pH is Iron. The tell tale signs are yellow leaves with the dark green veins at the top leaves. Many think it's a deficiency and start dumping amendment like crazy (quilty) not realizing it's just a lockout per the high pH. Still learning here but slowly understanding it quickly. :)

I should start a grow page here soon, my last grow was with a coco mix, this grow is with the Happy Frog Soil. Liking the soil so far. The listing I have there is just for reference, not a link, I get asked a lot what I'm using so thought I'd just list it there. Last night I was up to midnight reading this fabulous website I found Googling shit. And was blown away that Alfalfa Meal and Kelp Meal is favored for the Veg stage, then when you flip they recommended you use Neem Seed Meal with the Kelp Meal instead. o_O Who would of thunked it!? I was always using the Neem Seed Meal to help with the Gnats around the area here, read that a little of the stuff was a great deterrent of pests and unwanted nematodes. Turns out it's highly beneficial in the flowering stage! Just 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons is needed. And you only need to feed it once a month. About the same feeding schedule as the Earth Dust amendments I'm using. (Has that AZOMITE in there too ) :) I have to announce the member who got me going in the right direction here, without him reaching out to me I'd still be chasing my tail here, he's been a great member friend and I owe him a debt of gratitude. @Syntax747

Nope, I meant what I said...

This is the first generic website that I came to...

(hydro-5.5pH and up to 6.5pH for soil)

Yes by itself you can start having problems down the road like any soil would do, most growers here add some sort of amendment or do the synthetic thing, so kinda redundant. I appreciate the link you provided and will read that for sure, love a good read, I'm saying 7pH for the cannabis charts spread all over the internet all reaching for that 7pH mark as the falling off point of some of those nutrients. And I just read that article and it's not saying what your saying, that 5.5 to 6..5 is the recommended (fix) pH of the next couple of waterings to bring that pH back down to safer levels. And flushing your ladies in Organics is a no no. So that article is mostly aimed at non organic growers.

Sure, I'm not going to argue with you!

Except that very thing your using to adjust the pH is the super acidic stuff that's killing off your microbes.
Not if you're using ph UP to get your feed in range.
Why would you be pouring super acidic stuff in your organic soil of course that would mess stuff up and your correct they don’t like ph swing that’s why you watch and maintain what you feed your soil and keep it regular don’t get all crazy fancy do what works it’s 2021 not 1989
You'd be surprised how acidic some of the organic bottled feeds on the market are. Earth Juice is a good example. I remember when I used it years ago, and had weird issues in soil. I couldn't figure out what the problem was, until I ph'd the feed, and it was around 4,0ph. Adding a bit of ph up solved the issue easy peasy.

It's a good idea to pH the feed beforehand. I've done dumber shit. Good thing these are weeds or this place be empty.. :D

This is also why it’s better to use larger pots and a cover crop. It helps regulate ph and prevent swings in the soil. It will also help fend off nute burns and prevent deficiencies. living soil in smaller pots only leads to problems because you have to mess with it more not saying it doesn’t work just a bit more labor intensive

Yup,made a small tea with ewc and molasses. The molasses dropped the pH huge like down around 5.Haven't used it since.

Using 7 at the moment.. next grow will be 10 gallon pot. Makes sense, larger pots less hassle.

I use 30 if you got the room I see a lot of people build the 3x4 and 4x4 earth box’s
Tent grower (4x8 ) so probably not, I'd be pushing it with the 10 gallon pots. Now wait a minute, I might be able to, have to measure things out, it's tight as it is with the 7 gallon pots in there. I'd love to do a 4x4 garden bed. Still going through the red tape to get part of the garage built into a grow room and summers here are a easy 110 degrees in the garage let alone outside. Mrs was nice enough to let me finish my last grow inside the living room but that will never happen again, the humidity from the tents and electric bill with the AC units constantly on 24/7 during the summer. (I live in the desert) nope, lucky I have the garage, not to bad here in the winter. And @MustangStudFarm was right about the Dolomite, I finally got around to testing the soil pH and it was very low, 5.5 to 5.8 average on most of the pots, lucky Home Depot has the stuff. Just weird that it smells like cow manure, not sure if that's right. That or the soil is having a reaction to the Dolomite. My mind was blown when I found out Dolomite will buffer your soil up to 7pH max so no need to worry about over pHin the soil , I still applied it sparingly, about a tablespoon a gallon.

I top dress and use it to build my soil originally. I know if I switch out the 30 gallon bags I’m going to build a large bed instead. Eventually! Right now I’m not aloud to change anything up the mrs says I spend to much as it is.
