Drying and curing, just curious if it’s different for Organics

The reason I ask, is usually Organics has better and more diverse nutrient uptake. I have been growing for 5-6 years and still cannot turn out buds that smell like weed. They always smell like hobby lobby (potpourri) or hay. I grow in coot’s mix, and have probably over fertilized in the past. My leaves are very green, but I haven’t top dressed in like a month, still have 37 more days to go. Here’s my method

hang buds up by the stems, and only trim fan leaves off. I usually start curing by the time they feel dry, but I think this is deceptive because the inner is still moist. When they are dry enough I jar them at 60rh. Burp everyday for 10-15 minutes, for two weeks. Still can’t seem to get them to smell like weed. Should I expect a month or two before the smell goes away. It’s really annoying

You left out so many details. How long are you drying? What is the environment like? Fans, temps, rh? Is it inside a tent, garage, closet? I don't have much experience myself but it sounds like you aren't drying them long enough. 5-6 years though?

Also sometimes really terpy weed (which you will get a lot more with organics) can seem to smell not weed like, and it really can vary by strain as well. Maybe you just have not found the strain you are used to or that you like and are not used to the very pronounced terps that can come with growing that dank in organics ;-)

Really sounds like you need to just wait for the “cracker dry” test. Stems should snap clean when bent

Do you have any pics of your buds AT harvest. Legitimately one of the biggest things I see people do wrong is harvest too early, which then leads to drying to fast, which results in less then ideal smells and flavors .

I quit trying to "cure" weed years ago. After several experiments with it, I never saw a benefit to keeping it stored away for some amount of time. It never got "better" tasting or smelling, and it didn't get more potent so why bother.

The key is in a nice slow dry process. I would remove fan leaves and hang branches usually for 7-10 days. The stems would crack and the buds might feel kinda crispy on the outer edge, but still feel spongy inside. Then buck the buds into paper bags for another 4-7 days. Open them up once a day and shake the bag around to redistribute any moisture through everything evenly. Once you can take a bud out and it will grind up and smoke properly its done. Then put it into jars or bags for storage. I'd always make sure to check it the first week or so by smoking some every day and shaking the jar/bag around if it happened to still feel moist, but if I dried it correctly it would be perfect and taste amazing as soon as it was ready.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I slow dry until it can be jarred and forgotten about without molding. I think curing is a waste of time. Terpenes degrade with age so why would you want to wait before smoking your weed. Fresh is best in my opinion. The initial dry is important. Curing just lets the weed get old. Curing is just something you read about on the forums. Most people have never even heard about it.

No amount of burping or aging gets rid of hay smell. Either chopped early consistantly, or had 5 years worth of bad beans.
How do you know you are 37 days from chop? Seems a very specific number

That specific number is exactly what made me ask about chopping early before asking about drying conditions.

just because I have grown that long doesn’t mean I’m good at it. It’s in a storage closet in my house. Only airflow is between floor and the door, I don’t have an exact number on RH, but it’s about 50’s I usually let it dry for 12-14 days whenever it feels dry to the touch. My suspicion is it’s not dry enough or drying too fast. It does exactly smell like hay.

Not drying too fast. I only hang for around 4 days and nothing smells like hay.

My guess is chopped too soon.

Do you have hygrometers for the jars?
