24/0 vs. 18/6 debate is over!!!!

I'll have to get some pics from this year. I'm not great at taking photos with regularity unfortunately, but here are some from when I first built this room:

Day 44:

I've got trellis and better defoliation going now. I just threw everything together for that run. Turned out great but it was awhile ago now.

Day 58 Bogglegum:

A different, later run. Day 45 AKBB "Darien Gap" CGPRxTKNL5Haze:

AKBB Hawaiian Cat Piss:

I'll try to get some new ones soon.

This is all under 8/16 flower. I run the lights 9 to 5 because that's workin' hours. ;-)
Thanks for the pics, it looks respectable right enough.

There is more to plants than what has been written in Marijuana Grow books.

Bottom line
--------------------------------------------------
I use 28% less electricity in veg over 18/6
I use 33% less electricity in flower over 12/12

I suffer no yield loss, or lack of quality.
Have you done back to back grows, same cuttings and same conditions, with 12/12 vs 8/16?

I'm curious enough to try it.

Not back to back, exactly, but I have 2 or 3 strains that I've been growing for longer than I've run this light schedule, and they all work.

One of those is the Tahoe OG cut I have and it does react very differently with the 12/1 veg schedule. The internode length shrinks to like 1/4inch, and it develops trichomes at the intersections. They never develop into buds, and no seeds are ever produced while under 12/1. Once I shift to 8/16 it goes right back to making delicious buds that I've known for 10+ years.

I first started messing with my light schedules after running 24 on for veg for a year or so. I was trying to figure out why my plants were turning yellow so quickly after transplanting. I switched to 18/6 and that helped tremendously.

After a few years of growing like that, I read Joe Pietri's book and website and came across this 12/1 8/16 method. Unfortunately, the guy kinda invites controversy with his opinions, so I don't really follow him otherwise. The light schedule DOES work and I bought an older copy of the Greenhouse Management textbook that he sourced his method/research from. It has to do with short-day plant cultivation or something, I can't remember all the details.

I just know it works and saves me a ton of $$ which is important in the mountains here. I have to run the expensive heat producing lights (CMH) to keep things warm.

One more thing, I've noticed some seeds I pop behave weird with 12/1 from the get-go. I'm not sure why, and I haven't controlled for popping under 18/6 to see if they were flukes either. It was only 1 or 2 strains that acted weird, and I only tried 1 or 2 beans from those, so statistically insignificant, really.

I have noticed some males like to show early under 12/1 and I cull those. I have other males that hold pollen until I flip them, and those seem to be more stable anyway. Again, strain dependent.

I switched over everything to this schedule, and if I had room to run an 18/6 control for veg I would, but I don't so. :-)

interesting, what did you notice, how did they behave weird?

Yeah, but it was only one strain with unknown lineage, so could have very well been an autoflower. I've cracked dozens of other strains since without issue. Take clones/keep moms, etc.

I transplanted from 12/1 inside to outdoors this last year with much success also.
I'm impressed with your knowledge and experience on this. Do you do anything differently with light intensity?

Thanks! I was nervous to make the switch initially but I'm glad I did. I do wish I had a bit more space to put in 18/6 and 12/12 so I could do some side by side comparison runs. I haven't noticed any problems in the 2-3 years I've run this way though.

I don't do anything different except I run a battery backed digital timer instead of mechanical, so the light schedules don't get out of sync. I run non-dimmable CMH 315s in flower, sometimes with SolarCures. I use LED in veg almost exclusively.

How much space do each of your 315W fixtures light? Do you remember the color temperature? Mine were singing like 4000K, which is kinda blue. From there I can work out how much light you have.

The buddy I mentioned also reported good results and said he kept his light intensity pretty high to help keep his DLI up. That could be a key factor.

I light a 3.5x10.5 space with 4 x 315's and 3 SolarCures in between. Each light is over 2.6x3.5 roughly. I only have three of the 315's lit right now, and no SolarCures going on this run.

I hang 18-22 inches over the canopy.

I just use the normal Phillips CMH bulbs. 3100k I believe.

Pics I took the other day. I left the lights on, so the bud shots aren't great. My scrog game could be better too. ;-)

Peyote Cookies

I'm about to kill this one off to make room for others but I really dig the hamster cedar shaving musk aromas, so had to run it one more time.

I didn't do the best with the cat piss this time as I had some bugs with my watering system I didn't work out properly the first time :-( I think they will be ok though. Smells are fantastic antiseptic and powerful strong/skunky odors.
