They absolutely can be avoided. Last 3 years all my outdoor plants have come out clean of pests including caterpillars.I mean I always find a couple caterpillars when I wet trim the buds before hanging up, I still smoke it dont judge, I do grow strictly outdoors so you cant really avoid all of them.
Right on, best if you did I've read BT can take as long as 45 days to break down. I may yet use some more on my own but I'm trying not to my worm problems have been surprisingly few this year. Best of luck. fwiw next year my own plan is to begin the worm offensive before I even plant because I read if you put enough other bacteria in the ground and then replenish it every so often, the plant starts taking it up from the get-go. BT and fungicide for the bud rot, makes it hard for the bud rot to get started when other bacteria is already colonized. The rot often comes right behind where the worm goes. You can also buy mantis egg casings and hatch mantises they will help a lot. That's one reason my problems are fewer, had one in my plants and he was a busy boy too.and do a bud wash.
