Your Criteria: Highest THC or Most Trichs?

I'm sure this will start a fight but it's a serious question. What is your criteria when buying seeds or clones, very high THC content or bud looking like it's dipped in the sugar dish? Honestly, I've grown some of the best strains with the highest THC from the respective breeders but that does not appear to be the "all in all" to me personally. I'm thinking of changing my strategy to buying seeds that produce bud with tons of frosty trichs. What say you other growers?

My reason for this question is that my last grow was garbage. I smoked over an eighth every night (from 6PM to after midnight) and barely got a buzz. It gave me pain relief; that's the only reason I kept smoking it. The trichs were super tiny, maybe 1/3 the size, and maybe 1/4 the quantity of most of my grows. Thankfully there were only three plants.

For me its the “ parental lines “ used in strain.
I could care less for the lame foodie drops that flood seed market. Classic lines will always trump “ toffee pebbles “ or some other ridiculous strain. I look at breeders that have been in the game long time.

For some reason , purp strains are becoming a-thing - most are meh and are better for photos.

My go to :
Durban Poison
BD
Sour D
Master Kush
SSH
ROMULAN
etc.

I prefer high CBD strains it's not all about THC

I mean, if I were ONLY basing my decision on those two factors then I'd probably go with THC because I don't really care what it looks like if it does the job.

But honestly, those two things are only a small portion amongst a myriad of factors of what makes a strain good...for me. They are part of the equations but would never be a deciding factor.

Great question with no wrong answer since its all personal preference. I never grew anything that didn't get me smacked so my goal it to get the best flavors out of em. For me its not thc or trichs. It's the terps! Trichs is more for bag appeal. For thc if it's the one hitter quitter then thats different but I smoke all day so I will be high regardless. And never the same strain back to back. I like variety.

Thc alone means nothing frosty is nice but then again some stuff may not be super frosty and yet could suprise you still what i look for is good effect and taste lineages influence my choices too as well and the entourage effect is where its at theres too many things influencing effect cos some 22% stuff gets me more baked than 28% or 30+ stuff so thc alone is definitely not a factor for me

This answers your question; I could care less about THC percent or how frosty a bud is as the effects after using it is all that matters. Does it give me the stimulation or sedative effects I need, does it have a high ceiling or limited after a couple hits, can I smoke it for weeks while still feeling the effects or do I get acclimated to the buzz quickly, is the taste interesting and unique or is it the generic acrid/gas/OG funk that's dominant, does it yield well well and grow/clone easily or is it finicky?

Choosing bud based on THC percent or potency alone to decide what's the "best" would be the equivalent of thinking that the higher the alcohol content, the better the booze which is clearly absurd thinking as it ignores personal preference. Some people prefer low alcohol wines/beers/ciders, others prefer distilled liquors but no one is claiming that vodka is always better then wine, which is always better then beer just because one is 40% compared to 11% or 5-9%. They'd be laughed at as an immature, inexperience drinker who doesn't understand the subject matter. Like under prohibition though, the laws push people towards high THC products without concern for overall quality; the same as mixed drinks becoming prevalent due to the low quality of booze during the bootleg years. Which is one reason I grow my own so I don't have to cater to the market and can grow varieties that meet my needs and satisfy my flavour palette without caring about others opinions.

I've always preferred purp varieties as they're usually the most effective for managing my pain without leaving me zonked out, they usually hit the balance I like between sedative and stimulating effects perfectly. On the other hand I feel the same about most OG/GSC/GG hybrids as they don't do much for me and the effects/taste don't stand out in any way. To each their own which is often the problem with threads like this as it tends to ignore the nuance personal preference aspect by pushing the idea there's an ideal plant we should all be looking for instead of entrenching that what you personally enjoy smoking is purely subjective

Flavor, smell = #1

Most "reports" of super-high THC strains aren't true. Just go into a recreational store and grab ANY "super" strain they have and take those buds in to be tested, independently. I'd bet none of them would turn out what they are reported to be.

I thought the whole "highest THC" thing was played out years ago. For awhile, they were pushing the 40% THC range....of course, it was all BS...but that seemed to be where the marketing competition was focusing. I, personally, tried some that were "reported" to be ~34% THC and I was braced to be higher than I have ever been. Guess what...didn't happen. *shrugs*

Thankfully, it's starting to look like some of the best and most reputable breeders are focusing on bringing back full, rich flavor to the game. That's what I will keep looking for.

EDIT: One funny thing about trichomes....back in the 70's, when the really great tasting strains were available, I can't remember a single time I saw any trichomes on the buds....not by today's standards, anyway. Obviously they were present, but they didn't stand out....and some of that weed tasted so delicious and unique, there's almost no way to describe it.

Do you go for a fine wine, single malt scotch or a nice warm cognac by the fireside, or maybe some brandy moonshine? Or go right for the 95% Everclear straight up?
VERY good analogy. I prefer the good wine.

This is so true. As I think back to the days of $30 "lids", and how amazing that Colombian gold was, as well as the Jamaican and other Caribbean strains smelled and tasted, THAT is why CG was always my favorite and that's why I grew 59 plants of it last year. It didn't taste or smell the same but it kicked ass and was better than anything I've bought in the last 20 years. This last plants had terpenes of kerosene, cat piss, rotten potatoes, 5 day old fish, with an oaky finish.

The only thing I don't really care at all about is yield unless the plant is super dainty. My plants are always decently frosty, and a high thc percentage equals a higher yield of shatter, but I don't think I've ever grown a low thc strain. Terpenes are the make it or break it attribute.
