I meant to ask if you've ever fished a bait rod that has spiral/acid wrapped guides on it so the top section has the guides on the bottom instead of the top of the blank and if so how'd you like it?

I'm going to wrap one or two guides on my bait rod to see how it feels for next time I head out for pike. I'll leave the original two on the but section for now. The concept has been around for a long time and some rod companies are making them like that now but I only heard about it recently. Sound like a good idea to me.

Depends what I'm fishing and how depends on the size line I'm using. Casting salmon it's 30# power pro with 30# fluro leader (shock absorber) my main casting rod is rated 15-30lb fast action. Perfect for huge hooksets and power on the fight. My other rod is 12-25lb little lighter.... fast action. Then I rock a 10-20lb medium action 10'6 for skein fishing (floats) with 12#cxx mono

Oh Yeah, I see it now. I have some heavier gear for salt water but a long ways from that now but used to do a lot of fishing in the chuck when I lived near Vancouver in my younger years. The Fraser river was only 200 yds from our house so used to do a lot of fishing in there for sturgeon, salmon and even flatfish or big bullheads. Tidal water there so could get crabs too. We'd go out on the log booms or pack the 16' canoe over there and go all over. Not much for bar fishing tho and would rather go up in the mountains to hunt salmon and steelhead on all day hikes. Probably not so much any more tho. Liking my little boat for the limited fishing around here. Except for bottom fishing in the ocean with a cod rod that has 50# dacron on it even my salmon mooching rod is loaded with 10# Maxima and the same on the baitcaster. I've landed big salmon on those rods in fast water but lost a lot more. Love the challenge of fighting big fish on lighter gear.

In the last couple months I bought that 9'6" spinning rod off Amazon then at a Fields store of all places found an 11' Luhr Jensen float/drift rod that I just had to have tho I don't have a float reel . . .yet. They were both around $170Can. I bet it would work well with a bait caster but would need spiral wraps too. My son is big into float fishing my old hangouts and I sent him a centre-pin reel I had from somewhere years ago. He still uses it and is pretty damn good with it too. I've been shopping around for a 3000 series spinning reel for this new rod but not paying more than around $150 for one. I'm using my old 2000 bottom drag shimano on the new rod now and it seems to haul in the pike OK but I haven't hooked a real big one in ages. I like good tackle but don't need/can't afford a Cadillac when a Chevy will get me there just as well.

Some spawned out chum and coho on my last trip up the Chilliwack. The gulls and crows get the eyes first.



Lots of nice runs in the upper Chilliwack. There be monsters lurking thereabouts.



Perfect for running a float down or my fave, bottom bouncing with a spin-n-glo.

It's really good but I'm partial to my aldebaran. Can cast a 10th of a oz with ease.


I have been using it for micro crank baits and more recently micro glide baits.

BFS is tons of fun.

For those who are wondering what BFS is. Bait Finesse System. Essentially rod and reel in baitcaster form that can handle lures you would normally need a spinning setup for.

Is that electrical tape holding sliding reel rings in place? I have a 10 1/2ft Diawa mooching rod with a sliding reel seat that has a locking ring on a long cork grip and it don't lock worth shit and never did. It's heavier than the float rod I just got and bet it would work great with a cpin on it for the bug-uns.

That reel of yours would look real nice on this rod. I may never actually need a float rod so I'm not getting in deep yet. I'll probably end up giving the new rod to my son if I get out there and he likes it. Lots of missed b-day and Xmas prezzies over the years.

Picked up some sandpaper in town today so should have plenty to get the grip done over the weekend. Watched a video last night about 5min long. All fast forward like with not a word said of a guy with a grip in a lathe using various grades of sandpaper strips ripped off sheets to do a grip just like mine. At the end he used a little sponge brush to apply some cork seal. (picked up two of those as well), and it looked just great so I know how I'm doing mine. Then just ream it out to fit on my blank just right. That'll take me a couple of days probably.

Too late to go fishing tonight as I got busy with something else and it's got a lot smokier out there than it was earlier. I'd rather inhale the smoke from my little pipe than that stuff out there.

Been there, had that done to a rod as well. This rod I'm building is to replace the one I busted a bunch of the end of the rod off of but my pup chewed the top of the butt end like 25 years ago so I had to file it off below the lowest crack then carefully sandpaper the taper to fit back into the top section. Worked OK but went up a line size from 4 - 5wt. Now I sanded the tip to fit a new tiptop and it's gone up another size and casts a 6wt really nice but is only 7'7" instead of the original 9'. Seeing as how it works great I'm going to reposition the guides to match that length of rod. Wonky looking the way they are now and it should work better with proper guide spacing.

The old flyrod I took the tiptop off of is a cheapo fiberglass 9ft 8wt that I'm going to turn into a noodle rod like one I made 40 years ago and got stolen out of my car while fishing 50ft away. I have an old spin rod with a foot long composite bottom grip so will take the guides off then the reel seat and cut the rod leaving a few inches above the grip that I can insert into the bottom of the fly rod to turn it into a spin rod once I change all the guides over to that use. I used my old one for catching coho mostly loaded with 6# mono tossing spinners for them #3 - #4 Mepps and Vibrax types. The Mepps Black Fury, black with red spots on the blade and silver centre or the Vibrax hot pink body with a silver blade are my faves for that. Guys are flipping jigs for them now and doing well so I need to tie some up for next time I'm out there.

Everybody and their dog wants you to use their apps. This new android phone I got has a ton of them I need to go through and figure out what I can toss or is worth keeping. I only want what I'll actually use and turn off permissions for almost everything. Pisses me off I have to use the DJI app to fly my drone. It tracks all your flight logs, location etc or the damn thing won't move.

Everything's going digital. No more date tags on the license plates. No more pink slips for insurance and they keep pushing me to use the app. Could win 1 of 5 $200 prizes! Screw you!

Another generation and it'll all be digital including your money. If you want to toss the bum on the corner a few bucks he better have the f'n app!

Thing is all the yung-uns are slipping into it thinking it's all real and don't know any better.

I'm paying good money to keep to myself online and that's money well spent . . . with a f'n VISA card no less.
