Residue with Captain Jack's deadbug brew?

hey y'all.

read a lot of people using captain jacks with favorable results for various pests. this year i was having problems with caterpillars and spider mites. decided to give captain jacks a whirl.

read directions, mixed as directed (1 tbs less than directed... have learned my lessons with full strength mixes of anything frying plants) sprayed on my crops. waited.

as far as i can tell, there is little to no bug activity. it seems to have done it's job.
~however~
there are blemishes and dots and brown spots on almost all the plants now. i thought that the entire crop was infested with spidermites again because thats what it looked like. ripping spotty leaves off and checking them showed zero bugs. i pulled a lot of leaves frantically looking for bugs. didn't see any. but like i said, most of the leaves that WERE healthy green before spraying are now spotted and or browning. on ALL plants that were sprayed.

anyone else run into this after using captain jack's? is this common or am i right to freak out?

candyland was completely clean of any blemishes before spray, but was seated beside a plant that got his with spidermites so i sprayed it also. now it has the white spots that look like spidermite munch spots all over the leaves.


purple bubba kush is displaying brown and white spots now. this one is the worst affected after the spray.


both purple kush plants were green and healthy before the spray. now have spots like the rest.

I dont think thats residue, I think thats damage from the bugs.

does capt jack leave residue at all in your experience?

most of that damage is after spraying, but i have scoured the plants looking for any sign of live bug activity. i don't see any.

kinda baffled by this one. maybe the poison is still doing its job despite the insects munching? that's why i'm not seeing anything live crawling/munching?

don't think i have had the displeasure of meeting thrips before. this is indicative of the damage they do? (i thought it looked like spidermites)

Thrips and mites are almost microscopic so you may not have seen them. I used Captain Jacks yesterday with a good dousing and the plants have no residue.

I have the same thing, thrip damage. You can see them if you look really close, they are tiny and black and are almost shaped like rice. AT least IME I never see them underneath leaves, just on top. However spider mites will be found underneath leaves.

I just used Capt Jack's yesterday morning a little bit before the sunlight hits them. Unlike most bug sprays this doesn't seem to burn leaves but it evaporates really quick. I've used Jack's/Spinosad for years up until close to harvest time. At that point thrips are not going to be a factor but I do it for the dreaded budworms.

Never had an issue with residue and it doesn't affect the taste of the end product. I'm not sure how long a spraying protects a plant, I just always check for bugs or damage and spray again if I find any

i usually go out there with a magnifying glass. rip spotty leaves and look at them thru the glass. can usually see bodies if there are insects on them.

yeah, i think it's thrips too the more i read/see about them. first time i've dealt with them. usually spidemites and caterpillars. friggin bugs.

thanks for your input on capt jack. i believe i'm going to spray again in 4 more days just to kill any eggs that didn't get smoked the first round. it seems the thrips moved in and munched the poison. i don't see ANY insects on my plants now. i have been pulling leaves the last few days. nothing. clean plants, but the damage is done. (friggin bugs!)

according to general consensus on a few websites, spinosad will kill for up to 4 weeks, however will be weakened with rain and overhead irrigation despite being "rain tolerant".

Nope never had residue or burn from captain jacks but it kills thrips well. Spray like 3 times 3-4 days apart they always come back if you don’t get all of them

i have intent to spray again in 4 days to kill and eggs or larvae i missed last time. i gotta say i have been pulling leaves for a few days now and see zero insect activity. i am cool with that. never used this product before, but kinda like it now. just wish i had sprayed a week ago... prolly could have killed the thrips before they did this much damage. and man they chewed up the plants right quick. they went from lush green to spotty and munched in no time flat.
