Egyptian swimmer Abdelrahman Sameh says he has “been getting death threats” for showing solidarity with the people of Palestine, adding he could not celebrate his gold medal at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2023 as war rages on in Gaza.
Sameh – also known as Abdelrahman Elaraby – won the men’s 50-metre butterfly final at the tournament held in Greece last week, but said on Sunday it was difficult for him to celebrate it after a “mentally tough week”.
“I have been getting death threats – people have been attacking me all week for supporting Palestine,” he said when asked to speak about his win.
“My family goes to sleep, not knowing if someone is going to break into my room, if somebody is going to break into my apartment. They have to wonder every time I don’t pick up a call, ‘Is he busy or is someone trying to kill him?’”

Sameh has been posting news and images from the war in Gaza in an act of solidarity with the people of the besieged Strip – an act that has not gone down well with Israeli swimming officials.
One of his earlier social media posts included a political cartoon that showed the different perceptions of resistance by Palestinians and Ukrainians, according to a report on the swimming website SwimSwam.
On Friday, Israel Swimming Association Chairman Miki Halika wrote to World Aquatics – swimming’s global governing body – urging it to “take action against swimmers who support terrorism”.
“It is disheartening to see extremist ideologies tarnishing the reputation of our beloved sport,” Halika wrote in his complaint.
However, some users on X, earlier known as Twitter, noted that the Egyptian was missing or cropped out from the image showing the final list of winners that was posted on the World Aquatics account, leading them to start the trend “#WeStandWithAbdelrahmanSameh”.
Some users asked the world body “where’s Sameh” and others slammed it for allegedly cropping him out."

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Gaza Health Ministry says over 200 people have been killed in what it says was an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza City Hospital.
Hundreds of people were seeking shelter at the al-Ahli Hospital at the time of the blast.
Photos sent to The Associated Press showed fire engulfing the hospital halls, shattered glass and body parts scattered across the area.
There was no immediate Israeli military comment.

U.S. officials worked to convince Israel to allow delivery of supplies to desperate civilians, aid groups and hospitals after days of failed hopes for an opening in the siege.
With Israel barring entry of water, fuel and food into Gaza since Hamas’ brutal attack last week, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken secured an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss creation of a mechanism for delivering aid to the territory's 2.3 million people. U.S. officials said the gain might appear modest, but stressed that it was a significant step forward.
Still, as of late Tuesday, there was no deal in place. A top Israeli official said Tuesday his country was demanding guarantees that Hamas militants would not seize any aid deliveries. Tzahi Hanegbi, head of Israel’s National Security Council, suggested entry of aid also depended on the return of hostages held by Hamas.
“The return of the hostages, which is sacred in our eyes, is a key component in any humanitarian efforts,” he told reporters, without elaborating whether Israel was demanding the release of all of the roughly 200 people Hamas abducted before allowing supplies in.
U.S. President Joe Biden prepared to head to the region as he and other world leaders tried to prevent the war from sparking a broader regional conflict. Violence flared Tuesday along Israel’s border with Lebanon, where Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants operate.
With tens of thousands of troops massed along the border, Israel has been expected to launch a ground invasion into Gaza — but plans remained uncertain.
“We are preparing for the next stages of war,” military spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said. “We haven’t said what they will be. Everybody’s talking about a ground offensive. It might be something different.”

GAZA, Oct 17 (Reuters) - An Israeli air strike killed hundreds of people at a Gaza City hospital on Tuesday, health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave said, and the United Nation said an Israeli strike also hit one of its schools being used as a shelter.
A Gaza civil defence chief said on Al-Jazeera television that more than 300 people were killed at Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital. A Gaza Health Ministry official said at least 500 people were killed and injured. Both departments are under the Hamas-run government.
Israel's military said it did not have any details on the reported bombing.
Earlier on Tuesday, the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said an Israeli air strike had killed at least six people after striking one of its schools that has been functioning as a shelter for displaced people.
Health authorities in Gaza say at least 3,000 people have been killed in Israel's intense 11-day bombardment since Hamas militants rampaged into Israeli towns on Oct 6, killing more than 1,300 soldiers and civilians.
Hamas said the blast at the hospital mostly killed displaced people. A senior official for the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority, which operates in the West Bank but not in Gaza, described it as a massacre.

Two questions I had after this interview:

What will the international community consider quick and reasonable price paid by civilians in Gaza? I don't believe the international community, the ones that are already involved anyway, will ever not be united against Hamas. I would have thought the opposite, the worse it gets would be more pressure for negotiations with the Palestinian Authority?

What will the international community consider quick and reasonable price paid by civilians in Gaza? I don't believe the international community, the ones that are already involved anyway, will ever not be united against Hamas. I would have thought the opposite, the worse it gets would be more pressure for negotiations with the Palestinian Authority?

If they blame Iran, they will strike Iran, they just want to make sure they cripple their nuclear capability when they do and that concerns Uncle Sam. Concern over the response in Gaza is why Joe is scrambling to get to the place to try and mitigate the response and civilian deaths, perhaps leading to a wider war. Personally, I think Iran supported Hamas, but their government was blindsided by this attack, be careful of who you support and arm.Two questions I had after this interview:

I dunno, I'm basing the belief on the fact our intelligence never picked it up and HAMAS said less than a half dozen in their leadership knew about it until the last moment. I'm not sure it will matter to Israel though, blindsided or not they will smite them.

The CIA issued two reports warning the Biden administration of increased Hamas threats days before attacks.
Neither Joe Biden nor other senior White House officials were briefed on the reports.
Egypt and Israel also had intelligence suggesting an upcoming terrorist onslaught.
Egypt warned Israel of a possible Hamas attack approximately three days before it occurred, per Forbes. The level of communication and the extent of this warning's reach remain uncertain.

The Israeli army is carrying out extensive arrests of Palestinians throughout the occupied West Bank, with some of these detentions made on suspicion of "incitement" on social media platforms.
According to Palestinian sources, nearly 700 Palestinians have been arrested by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the outbreak of the war on 7 October.
Overnight on Monday, 16 October, 51 Palestinians were detained in the occupied West Bank. The long list of detainees includes former Palestinian minister Issa Ja'abri and the head of the disbanded Palestinian Legislative Council, Dr Aziz Dweik. Both are members of the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas.
An Israeli military spokesperson said more than 200 Hamas members have been detained in the occupied West Bank since 7 October.
Addameer, a Palestinian rights group, stated that legal intervention on behalf of the Palestinian detainees is being impeeded by Israeli authorities.
Following the outbreak of hostilities, the Israeli army invoked the so-called military order No. 1651, which permits the arrest of a person for up to 8 days before being presented to the court. Palestinians in the occupied West Bank appear in Israeli military courts, unlike Israeli settlers who are tried in civil courts in Israel. Before 7 October, Palestinian prisoners typically appeared in court within 96 hours of arrest. The Israeli army said the procedure is implemented as part of " a military campaign against terrorism".
Lawyers, according to Addameer, face problems locating the detainee, including a 48-hour waiting period imposed by the authorities.
