Here's the original version with the Great Society. If you're not a fan of San Francisco jam bands, and I'm not, fast forward to about 4 minutes and 30 seconds to hear Grace's vocals. I'm not a fan of any falsetto vocals, even Grace's.1939. Grace Slick. Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship. Starship. White Rabbit
Improvisation was the name of the game at the time. It was so free. They didn't have to adhere to the "under 3 minutes" standard. Adding to that was the emergence of FM radio. KPPC-FM in Pasadena, later KMET in L.A. were my faves. A great period for rock music. It didn't last long. Here's the original version with the Great Society. As I said to my wife when I heard this, Grace ought to send Jack Casady a million dollar check every year, just for the intro to White Rabbit. The Great Society's version of this would probably not have been as successful.
I could listen to The Allman Bros, Canned heat, and the Airplane jam on for hours on end, was just never into the Dead or the folk/jazz scene.Improvisation was the name of the game at the time. I noticed Jorma Kaukonen missing from R.S. 250 guitarists. It doesn't surprise me. R.S. record reviewers were pretentious back in 1970.I could listen to The Allman Bros, Canned heat, and the Airplane jam on for hours on end, was just never into the Dead or the folk/jazz scene.
And I think it was Bass Guitarist magazine that didn't even list Jack Casady in the top 25?????I noticed Jorma Kaukonen missing from R.S. 250 guitarists. It doesn't surprise me. R.S. record reviewers were pretentious back in 1970.
